There is a Morocco that exists beyond the curated Instagram riad and the rooftop cocktail bar. A Morocco of clay kitchens and bread baked over open flame, of Berber women kneading argan oil into your skin according to methods handed down across generations, of a family welcoming you not as a guest but as kin. Finding that Morocco is becoming harder, unless you know where to look.

That is precisely what Riad Eucalyptus, Ethnic Hotel offers. Positioned just a ten-minute drive from Essaouira’s UNESCO-listed medina, at the edge of the wild Atlantic coast, this boutique property has quietly earned a reputation as one of the most authentically Moroccan addresses in the region. In an era when guesthouses in the area are increasingly gravitating toward a polished, Ibiza-inspired aesthetic, Riad Eucalyptus has chosen a different path entirely; and its guests are all the richer for it.

This is not simply a hotel. It is, as the team here will tell you directly, the gateway into Moroccan and Amazigh culture for anyone who comes to stay in Essaouira.

A Architecture of Authenticity: Two Buildings, One Living Heritage

Riad Eucalyptus is composed of two buildings; and one of them is a genuine traditional riad, a true architectural rarity rather than a stylistic borrowing. Together, they house 12 individually decorated ethno-chic rooms and 2 suites, each designed with cultural intentionality. Handcrafted Moroccan tiles, ethnic motifs, locally sourced materials, and a palette that speaks to the land rather than a Pinterest trend board; every corner of this property has been curated with purpose.

The garden is central to the Eucalyptus experience. Conceived in the traditional Moroccan style, it is a space of calculated tranquility; a place to rest, to slow down, and to remember why you came here in the first place. Guests return from excursions into Essaouira’s vibrant medina or the surrounding countryside and find in this garden exactly what they need: shade, stillness, and the faint sound of nature replacing city noise. A heated pool and sun terrace complete the outdoor retreat.

“In a market where many properties have drifted toward a glossy, trend-led aesthetic, Riad Eucalyptus has made an active, deliberate choice to remain deeply, unapologetically Moroccan.”

That choice is its greatest asset. Travelers seeking an authentic Moroccan boutique hotel near Essaouira will find here something increasingly rare: a property that prioritizes cultural integrity over commercial trend.

Breakfast Over a Berber Fire: The Cuisine of Memory

Of all the experiences that define a stay at Riad Eucalyptus, breakfast may be the most arresting. Each morning, bread is baked directly in front of guests on a traditional Berber kitchen (a kanoun) built from clay, straw, and stone, installed within the Moroccan garden. It is not theater. It is simply how bread has been made here for centuries, and the team sees no reason to change that.

The restaurant extends this philosophy across every meal. The cuisine is traditional Moroccan with a pronounced Berber influence; and the endorsement most often cited by the Eucalyptus team is not from a travel critic but from Moroccan guests themselves, who have told them they can taste the Berber soul in the food. That is not a marketing line. That is cultural fidelity made edible.

Guests can dine on shaded outdoor terraces, within the tiled courtyard, or in the garden itself. The menu is an exercise in restraint and quality; traditional recipes executed with the honesty and care that only comes from a team that grew up eating this food. From slow-cooked tagines fragrant with ras el hanout to msemen dripping with argan honey, this is not hotel food. This is home cooking at its most generous.

Hammam & Wellness: Ritual Over Routine

The SPA at Riad Eucalyptus does not offer wellness as an amenity; it offers it as a cultural practice. Massages and hammam treatments are performed according to the precepts of traditional Moroccan massage, not adapted or softened for a generic spa menu. The hammam ritual — a sequence of steam, black soap, and vigorous kessa exfoliation — has been a cornerstone of Moroccan social and spiritual life for a thousand years. At the Eucalyptus, guests experience it as it was intended.

Body scrubs, pedicures, and additional wellness treatments are also available, all delivered by therapists who bring the same commitment to Moroccan tradition that characterizes every other element of this property. Between treatments, the heated pool and garden provide the perfect complement — restorative spaces that ask nothing of you except that you rest.

For travelers who arrive frayed from a long journey and leave with something resembling inner quiet, the spa at Riad Eucalyptus is often credited as the turning point. It is wellness with roots — and that makes all the difference.

The Berber Family Behind the Hotel

No review of Riad Eucalyptus is complete without speaking about the people who make it. The team is Berber, and they bring with them a quality of warmth that is not a trained service standard but a cultural inheritance. Led by owners Nathalie, Patrick, and Abdou — three individuals who share a deep, personal love for Moroccan and Berber culture — the property operates with an unmistakable family-home spirit.

Guests consistently describe being made to feel not like paying visitors but like welcomed members of a household. Staff go beyond answering logistical questions; they actively share their knowledge of Moroccan culture, recommend experiences that most tour operators overlook, and engage with travelers as people rather than room numbers. These recommendations are also captured on the hotel’s blog, an increasingly valuable resource for anyone planning a culturally immersive stay in the Essaouira region.

This is, ultimately, what distinguishes the Eucalyptus from the broader market of boutique riads in Morocco. The building can be replicated. The tiles can be imported. The team cannot be manufactured.

Services, Privatisation & Seminars: A Property for Every Journey

Beyond the leisure stay, Riad Eucalyptus offers remarkable versatility. The property’s full services offering caters to a wide range of travelers and needs — from solo cultural adventurers to families, couples, and groups seeking something more considered than a standard resort.

The hotel is available for full privatisation — an increasingly sought-after option for family reunions, intimate celebrations, creative retreats, and wellness weekends. And for companies seeking an inspired, off-grid environment for team retreats or strategy sessions, the seminars offering provides a professionally managed framework within a culturally rich setting that stimulates rather than sedates.

Activity options in the surrounding area are equally diverse: quad bike excursions through the scrubland, camel and horseback treks along the Atlantic coast, windsurfing on Essaouira’s notoriously windy beach, golf at the nearby Mogador course, and walking routes into the Haha mountain foothills. The riad arranges transfers to and from Essaouira’s center, ensuring that the rural tranquility of the property never comes at the cost of access to the city.

Essaouira and Beyond: An Ideal Base for Cultural Discovery

Riad Eucalyptus is situated approximately 8 km from Essaouira’s medina — close enough to visit at will, far enough to feel entirely removed from its bustle when you return. The surrounding region is one of Morocco’s most compelling: Essaouira itself is a UNESCO World Heritage city, its blue-and-white ramparts and labyrinthine alleys home to artisan workshops, galleries, and one of North Africa’s most celebrated music festivals, Gnaoua. The wild Atlantic coastline — battered by trade winds and beloved by surfers and kitesurfers — adds a dramatic natural counterpoint to the medina’s cultural density.

From the Eucalyptus, guests are ideally positioned to explore all of it. The hotel team’s recommendations go beyond the obvious — they point guests toward local souks, artisan cooperatives, mountain villages, and coastal fishing communities that rarely make it into conventional travel guides. Those recommendations, grounded in genuine local knowledge rather than commission arrangements, are available on the hotel’s blog and through direct conversation with the team.

Riad Eucalyptus Is Not Just a Hotel, It Is Your Entry Point Into Morocco

Morocco attracts millions of visitors each year, but relatively few of them experience it with the depth and intimacy that Riad Eucalyptus makes possible. In a market increasingly shaped by trend-driven aesthetics and algorithmic hospitality, this property stands apart as a deliberate custodian of living Moroccan and Berber culture; a place where the food, the architecture, the wellness rituals, and above all the people, are engaged in a quiet act of cultural preservation.

Guests do not simply visit Morocco here. They enter it. Whether you are planning a first journey to the Essaouira region, returning to seek something more meaningful than your last stay, or organizing a private retreat for a group of discerning travelers, Riad Eucalyptus, Ethnic Hotel offers an experience that is rare, resonant, and entirely genuine.

Explore rooms, wellness offerings, and dining at eucalyptushotel.com; and begin planning a stay in one of Essaouira’s most authentically Moroccan addresses.

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when you stumble upon a place that wasn’t trying too hard to be discovered. Asilah is one of those places; a small Atlantic coastal town where artists have claimed whitewashed medina walls as their canvas, where fishing boats still dictate the daily rhythm, and where the crash of ocean waves replaces the call of souk vendors. Here, tucked into this refreshingly unhurried corner of northern Morocco, Hotel Al Alba has quietly built something remarkable: not just a place to sleep, but an entire philosophy of coastal Moroccan living.

Most travelers race between Tangier and Chefchaouen without realizing what they’re missing. Asilah sits right between them, a 45-minute drive from the airport, yet it feels worlds away from Morocco’s tourist circuits. What makes Hotel Al Alba particularly intriguing isn’t just its location; it’s the ambition behind it. This isn’t a hotel that bolted on a spa as an afterthought or added a restaurant because guests needed somewhere to eat breakfast. Instead, it’s built around three equally weighted pillars: a thoughtfully designed boutique hotel, two authentic hammam facilities (one here in Asilah, another in nearby Tetouan), and a Mediterranean restaurant that takes Moroccan ingredients seriously.

The result? You can spend three days here and genuinely feel like you’ve experienced something complete; not just passed through. This is the full story of what Hotel Al Alba offers, why it matters, and how to make the most of everything it’s built.

Hotel Al Alba: Boutique Luxury on Morocco’s Atlantic Coast

Asilah’s position along Morocco’s northern Atlantic coast, approximately 46 kilometers south of Tangier, makes Hotel Al Alba remarkably accessible for international travelers. The town sits at a cultural crossroads where European influence meets authentic Moroccan character, creating an atmosphere distinct from the country’s better-known tourist centers. Visitors arriving through Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport will find Asilah within an easy 45-minute drive, while those exploring Morocco by road discover the town perfectly positioned between Tangier and Rabat along the coastal highway.

The town itself serves as Morocco’s artistic soul, particularly during the annual International Cultural Moussem, when local and international artists transform the medina’s white walls into outdoor galleries. This creative energy permeates Asilah year-round, and Hotel Al Alba benefits from its strategic location; close enough to the medina’s cultural heartbeat yet positioned to offer guests tranquility and refined comfort.

Accommodations and Design Philosophy

Hotel Al Alba embraces a design philosophy that honors Moroccan architectural heritage while delivering contemporary luxury standards. The property showcases the region’s characteristic white-on-white aesthetic, with crisp facades that capture and reflect the quality of Atlantic light unique to this coastal region. Inside, the hotel balances traditional Moroccan craftsmanship with modern minimalism, creating spaces that feel both culturally rooted and internationally sophisticated.

Guest rooms feature carefully curated details that reflect local artisanship; handwoven textiles, carved woodwork, and tadelakt plasterwork that demonstrates centuries-old Moroccan techniques. Yet these traditional elements complement rather than overwhelm, integrated within contemporary layouts that prioritize comfort and functionality. High-quality linens, climate control, and modern bathrooms ensure that cultural authenticity never compromises guest comfort.

The hotel’s attention to spatial quality becomes evident in room proportions and natural light management. Large windows frame views of either the Atlantic Ocean or Asilah’s distinctive architecture, while private terraces in select accommodations extend living spaces outdoors; a design choice that acknowledges Morocco’s favorable climate and the coastal lifestyle that defines Asilah.

Guest Experience and Services

What distinguishes Hotel Al Alba from standard accommodation options is its commitment to personalized hospitality. The property operates at a scale that enables staff to recognize individual preferences and anticipate guest needs without intrusion. This approach to service reflects the Moroccan concept of hospitality as relationship-building rather than mere transaction.

The hotel’s concierge services demonstrate deep local knowledge, connecting guests with Asilah’s hidden dimensions; whether directing art enthusiasts to emerging galleries, arranging private medina tours with local historians, or securing reservations at family-run restaurants that rarely appear in guidebooks. This insider access transforms a hotel stay into genuine cultural immersion.

Property facilities enhance rather than distract from the Asilah experience. The swimming pool provides refreshment after beach excursions, while communal terraces offer spaces for both social interaction and quiet contemplation. The hotel recognizes that modern luxury often means having choices; between activity and rest, engagement and retreat, company and solitude.

What Makes It Stand Out

Hotel Al Alba’s integration of three distinct yet complementary services creates a comprehensive hospitality ecosystem rarely found in boutique properties. Guests aren’t simply booking accommodation; they’re accessing a curated lifestyle experience that includes wellness through the hammams and culinary excellence through the restaurant. This holistic approach means visitors can enjoy world-class hammam treatments and exceptional dining without ever leaving the Hotel Al Alba family of services; a convenience that enhances both relaxation and cultural authenticity.

The hotel’s commitment to quality over scale ensures consistency across all touchpoints. Rather than expanding room count, Hotel Al Alba has invested in deepening the guest experience through the hammam additions in both Asilah and Tetouan, and refining its restaurant offerings. This strategic focus creates a property where excellence is measurable not in size but in attention to detail and guest satisfaction.

Hammam Al Alba: Authentic Wellness Across Two Locations

The hammam occupies a unique position in Moroccan culture, functioning simultaneously as cleansing ritual, social institution, and wellness practice. For centuries, these traditional bathhouses have served as communal gathering spaces where Moroccans engage in purification rituals that combine physical cleansing with spiritual renewal. Unlike Western spas that often emphasize individual treatment rooms and quiet solitude, traditional hammams embrace a more communal approach, where the ritual itself; the progression through different temperature rooms, the exfoliation, the rest periods; follows time-honored sequences passed through generations.

Hotel Al Alba’s hammam facilities honor this cultural foundation while adapting the experience for contemporary travelers. The result is wellness infrastructure that maintains authentic Moroccan techniques and rituals while providing the privacy, hygiene standards, and service quality that international visitors expect.

Hammam Al Alba Asilah

The flagship HAMMAM AL ALBA ASILAH brings traditional Moroccan wellness practices to the heart of the coastal town, offering guests an authentic hammam experience within easy reach of the hotel. The Asilah facility combines architectural elements familiar to traditional hammams (domed ceilings, marble surfaces, graduated temperature rooms) with modern filtration systems, climate control, and meticulous hygiene protocols.

The hammam experience at this location follows the classical progression. Guests begin in a warm room that opens pores and prepares skin, then move to hotter chambers where the body fully acclimates to heat and humidity. The signature black soap application and vigorous exfoliation with a kessa glove (performed by experienced therapists trained in traditional techniques) removes dead skin cells and stimulates circulation in ways that conventional bathing cannot replicate.

Beyond the fundamental hammam ritual, the Asilah location offers complementary treatments that extend the wellness experience. Rhassoul clay masks, sourced from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, provide mineral-rich skincare rooted in Moroccan beauty traditions. Argan oil massages incorporate Morocco’s most celebrated natural product, delivering both relaxation and skin nourishment. These additions allow guests to customize their hammam visit based on time availability and wellness objectives.

The facility accommodates both those familiar with hammam culture and first-time visitors. Staff provide clear guidance on the ritual sequence, appropriate etiquette, and what to expect at each stage, ensuring that cultural unfamiliarity never becomes a barrier to enjoying this quintessentially Moroccan wellness practice.

Hammam Al Alba Tetouan

Recognizing that many travelers explore Morocco’s northern region beyond Asilah, Hotel Al Alba expanded its hammam services to include HAMMAM AL ALBA TETOUAN, extending its wellness philosophy to this culturally rich city approximately 60 kilometers from Asilah. Tetouan, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its well-preserved medina and Andalusian architectural influences, provides a distinctly different context for the hammam experience.

The Tetouan location maintains the same commitment to authentic techniques and quality service while adapting to its urban setting. The facility serves both Hotel Al Alba guests exploring the region and Tetouan residents, creating a cultural exchange that benefits all visitors. This dual clientele ensures the hammam maintains genuine Moroccan character; locals wouldn’t patronize a facility that prioritized tourist expectations over authentic practice.

Hammam Al Alba Tetouan offers particular value for travelers following northern Morocco’s cultural circuit, which often includes Tetouan’s medina, Chefchaouen’s blue streets, and the Rif Mountain region. The ability to incorporate an authentic hammam experience into this itinerary, backed by Hotel Al Alba’s quality standards, transforms what might be a rushed day trip into a more balanced journey that includes wellness and restoration.

Treatment menus at both locations align, ensuring consistency regardless of which facility guests visit. However, the Tetouan hammam also incorporates some treatments utilizing ingredients specific to the Rif region, creating location-specific offerings that reward those who visit both facilities.

The Hammam Experience

For travelers unfamiliar with hammam culture, understanding what to expect enhances both comfort and appreciation. The experience typically spans 60 to 90 minutes, though guests can extend their visit with additional treatments. Upon arrival, visitors receive traditional hammam accessories; a kessa exfoliating glove, savon beldi (black soap), and sometimes a lightweight wrap or shorts for modesty.

The progression through temperature-graduated rooms serves physiological purposes. Initial warm rooms prepare the body gradually, preventing the shock that sudden heat exposure can cause. As humidity and temperature increase, pores open, muscles relax, and the skin becomes receptive to the cleansing and exfoliation that follows. This careful sequencing reflects centuries of empirical knowledge about optimal skin care and circulation enhancement.

The exfoliation process, while vigorous, delivers results immediately visible; skin emerges noticeably softer and more radiant. The removal of dead skin cells allows subsequent moisturizing treatments to penetrate more effectively, whether through argan oil massage or natural rhassoul clay applications. Many guests report that hammam exfoliation surpasses any Western body scrub they’ve experienced, both in thoroughness and in the quality of results.

Beyond physical benefits, the hammam offers psychological restoration. The enforced slowdown; the inability to rush through the temperature acclimation, the surrender to the exfoliation process performed by skilled hands, the final rest period in cooling rooms; creates a meditative state difficult to achieve in conventional spas. First-time visitors often arrive uncertain and leave as hammam advocates, understanding why this practice has endured for centuries across Moroccan culture.

Al Alba Restaurant: Mediterranean Cuisine with Moroccan Soul

AL ALBA RESTAURANT represents Hotel Al Alba’s commitment to excellence extending beyond accommodation and wellness into gastronomy. The restaurant embraces a culinary philosophy that honors Morocco’s position as a Mediterranean nation while celebrating the country’s distinctive flavor traditions and ingredient heritage. This dual allegiance (to both Mediterranean cooking principles and Moroccan culinary identity) creates a menu that feels simultaneously familiar and revelatory.

The kitchen prioritizes ingredient sourcing, recognizing that exceptional cooking begins with exceptional raw materials. Morocco’s agricultural diversity, from Atlantic seafood to Atlas Mountain produce, provides a foundation that few cuisines can match. The restaurant leverages this advantage through relationships with local fishermen, farmers, and artisanal producers who supply ingredients at peak quality and seasonality.

Chef-driven rather than corporate in approach, Al Alba Restaurant allows culinary creativity within a framework of quality and consistency. Menus evolve with seasons and market availability, ensuring that repeat guests discover new preparations while signature dishes maintain the standards that earned their popularity. This balance between innovation and reliability characterizes restaurants serious about both culinary excellence and guest satisfaction.

Menu Highlights

Al Alba Restaurant’s breakfast service establishes the day’s culinary tone, offering both international standards and Moroccan specialties. Fresh-baked breads, house-made preserves, and locally sourced olive oils provide simple perfection alongside more elaborate preparations. Traditional Moroccan breakfast elements (msemen pancakes, honeyed pastries, fresh-squeezed orange juice from the country’s abundant citrus groves) introduce guests to flavors they’ll encounter throughout Morocco.

Lunch and dinner menus showcase the restaurant’s Mediterranean-Moroccan synthesis. Seafood features prominently, with daily catches prepared using techniques from both culinary traditions. A whole fish might be grilled simply with chermoula marinade; Morocco’s ubiquitous herb and spice blend; allowing pristine seafood flavor to dominate while Moroccan aromatics provide accent. Alternatively, seafood tagines demonstrate how Morocco’s iconic clay-pot cooking transforms Mediterranean ingredients into something distinctly North African.

Signature dishes reveal the kitchen’s technical capabilities and creative vision. Locally caught fish prepared with preserved lemon and saffron illustrates how classic Moroccan flavors can elevate rather than overpower delicate proteins. Slow-cooked lamb dishes honor Morocco’s meat-cooking traditions while incorporating seasonal vegetables that add freshness and balance.

The wine program demonstrates sophistication appropriate to fine dining, featuring Moroccan wines that surprise visitors unfamiliar with the country’s wine production. Morocco’s wine regions, particularly around Meknes and Essaouira, produce distinctive bottles that pair excellently with the restaurant’s cuisine. International selections provide familiar options while the Moroccan offerings encourage experimentation and discovery.

Dining Atmosphere

Al Alba Restaurant’s interior design extends the hotel’s aesthetic philosophy into culinary spaces. Clean lines, quality materials, and careful lighting create an environment that elevates dining without formality that feels forced or uncomfortable. The space reads as sophisticated rather than stuffy, a distinction that welcomes both special occasions and casual meals.

Outdoor dining options capitalize on Asilah’s favorable climate and coastal setting. Terraces provide alternative atmospheres; some intimate for couples seeking romance, others more communal for families and groups. Evening dining outdoors, with Atlantic breezes moderating temperatures and ocean sounds providing ambient soundtrack, ranks among the experience’s most memorable aspects.

The restaurant accommodates various occasions with equal competence. Romantic dinners receive appropriate attention; discrete table placement, pacing that allows conversation, wine service that enhances without intruding. Family meals benefit from flexible menus and staff comfortable serving multiple generations. Business dinners find a professional environment with service standards that reflect well on hosts.

Culinary Experience Beyond the Plate

What distinguishes memorable dining from merely good food often resides in details beyond ingredients and technique. Al Alba Restaurant demonstrates this understanding through presentation that respects both aesthetic appeal and practical dining. Dishes arrive visually compelling yet approachable, plated to invite eating rather than hesitation over disturbing artful arrangements.

Service style balances professionalism with warmth, a combination characteristic of Moroccan hospitality at its best. Staff members demonstrate menu knowledge that enables informed recommendations, wine pairing suggestions that enhance rather than oversell, and attentiveness calibrated to guest preferences. Some diners prefer extensive interaction with servers; others value efficiency and minimal interruption. Quality service recognizes and adapts to these variations.

The restaurant’s connection to Moroccan gastronomic traditions extends beyond menu content to cultural context. Staff can explain ingredient histories, cooking technique origins, and regional variations that inform dish development. This educational dimension, offered organically rather than pedantically, enriches the dining experience for culturally curious travelers who view meals as opportunities to understand their destination more deeply.

Special culinary events occasionally punctuate the regular menu calendar; guest chef collaborations, regional ingredient celebrations, traditional feast recreations. These events demonstrate the restaurant’s engagement with both contemporary culinary culture and historical Moroccan food traditions, positioning Al Alba as a dynamic dining destination rather than static hotel restaurant.

Planning Your Visit to Hotel Al Alba

Best Times to Visit Asilah

Asilah’s coastal climate creates year-round visitation possibilities, though seasonal variations offer distinct experiences. Summer months, particularly July and August, bring both peak tourism and the town’s famous International Cultural Moussem, when artists transform medina walls into open-air galleries and cultural programming fills the town. This period delivers maximum energy and cultural programming but also maximum crowds and premium pricing.

Spring and early fall represent optimal balance for many travelers. March through May and September through November provide excellent weather (warm but not excessive temperatures, minimal rainfall, comfortable ocean swimming conditions) without summer congestion. Hotel availability and rates during these shoulder seasons often favor travelers, while Asilah’s cultural life continues with local galleries, restaurants, and shops operating at full capacity.

Winter visits appeal to travelers seeking solitude and off-season pricing. While ocean swimming becomes less appealing, beach walking remains pleasant, and Asilah’s medina exploration actually benefits from cooler temperatures. The hammam experiences become particularly welcome during winter months, providing warmth and relaxation that feels especially restorative in cooler weather.

Booking and Packages

Hotel Al Alba accommodates direct booking through its website, ensuring guests receive best-rate guarantees and most comprehensive information about current packages and promotions. The ability to coordinate hotel accommodation, hammam appointments, and restaurant reservations through single contact points simplifies planning and enables package opportunities that wouldn’t exist through separate bookings.

Combined packages that integrate hotel stays with hammam treatments and dining credits offer both economic value and logistical convenience. These bundled offerings eliminate the need to separately arrange each element while often providing pricing advantages over à la carte booking. The hotel’s reservation team can customize packages based on stay duration, guest preferences, and special occasions.

Advance booking becomes particularly important for peak season visits and for travelers with specific room preferences or hammam appointment times. However, the hotel maintains flexibility for last-minute availability and can often accommodate spontaneous hammam visits or restaurant reservations even without advance planning.

Making the Most of Your Stay

Strategic planning maximizes the Hotel Al Alba experience. Consider scheduling hammam appointments mid-stay rather than immediately upon arrival or before departure. This timing allows the wellness benefits to enhance your vacation rather than beginning or ending it. The post-hammam relaxation and improved sleep quality contribute more meaningfully when you have subsequent days to enjoy these benefits.

Restaurant reservations merit planning for dinner service, particularly during high season, while breakfast and lunch typically accommodate walk-in guests. Experiencing Al Alba Restaurant multiple times during your stay reveals menu breadth and allows progression from familiar Mediterranean preparations to more adventurous Moroccan specialties as your palate acclimates.

Asilah itself rewards dedicated exploration. The medina’s compact size enables thorough wandering without exhaustion, while the beaches extending both north and south of town offer kilometers of Atlantic coastline rarely crowded even in summer. Local galleries showcase contemporary Moroccan art year-round, and the Hassan II Park provides green space with ocean views.

Day trip possibilities from Asilah extend the experience into Morocco’s northern region. Tangier lies close enough for easy visits to its renovated medina and clifftop cafes. Chefchaouen’s famous blue streets sit approximately two hours inland, creating feasible day-trip options. Tetouan offers both historical medina exploration and the opportunity to visit Hammam Al Alba’s second location, combining cultural sightseeing with wellness continuation.

Discover Your Perfect Asilah Escape at Hotel Al Alba

Hotel Al Alba transcends conventional boutique hotel categorization by offering a truly comprehensive Moroccan coastal experience. The integration of sophisticated accommodation, authentic hammam wellness at both HAMMAM AL ALBA ASILAH and HAMMAM AL ALBA TETOUAN, and Mediterranean-Moroccan dining at AL ALBA RESTAURANT creates a destination ecosystem where each element enhances the others. Guests discover they’re not simply staying at a hotel but engaging with a carefully curated interpretation of Morocco’s northern coastal lifestyle.

The value proposition extends beyond luxury amenities to cultural authenticity; hammam experiences that honor Moroccan traditions, cuisine that respects both Mediterranean principles and local flavors, hospitality that reflects genuine Moroccan warmth rather than corporate service protocols. For travelers seeking Morocco beyond the imperial cities, who appreciate coastal tranquility and artistic culture, who value wellness and gastronomy as integral travel components rather than optional additions, Hotel Al Alba delivers an experience precisely calibrated to these priorities.

Whether planning a dedicated Asilah stay, a northern Morocco circuit, or a peaceful escape between more intensive travel segments, Hotel Al Alba provides infrastructure and services that transform good intentions into realized experiences. The combination of accessibility, quality, authenticity, and comprehensive offerings positions this property as a premier choice for discerning travelers discovering Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

British tourists are increasingly swapping Spain for Morocco, drawn by its unique allure, while destinations like Egypt and Algeria also gain traction.

Amid frustration with overcrowded Spanish hotspots, UK holidaymakers are seeking alternatives, propelling Morocco’s tourism surge. Once a steadfast favourite, Spain now faces competition as anti-tourism protests in its Canary Islands and Majorca unsettle visitors.

Airlines are responding to this shift. Carriers have expanded routes to Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Agadir, with British Airways launching direct flights to Agadir—a boon for Brits exploring North Africa.

Morocco Cements Status as a Top Holiday Destination for British Travellers

Morocco’s tourism sector thrives, welcoming 17.4 million visitors in 2024—a 20% year-on-year increase (UNWTO). Its mix of cultural richness, dramatic landscapes, and affordability eclipses many European rivals. From bustling souks and historic sites to warm hospitality, Morocco delivers unforgettable experiences.

The climate further elevates its appeal. With summer temperatures averaging 36°C, it’s ideal for sun-seeking Brits.

Luxury, Cuisine, and History: Morocco’s Winning Trio

To cater to rising demand, Morocco’s hospitality sector is upgrading. Luxury hotels like Agadir’s The View and Dades Valley’s Eden offer world-class stays. Marrakech remains a jewel, blending resilience (post-2023 earthquake) with culinary innovation at venues like Noujoum and Le Terrasse.

History enthusiasts relish landmarks such as Volubilis’ Roman ruins and Ait Benhaddou’s UNESCO site, adding depth to holidays.

Morocco Leads North Africa’s Tourism Surge

This North African nation spearheads a broader trend of Brits venturing beyond Europe. While Spain remains popular, Morocco’s authenticity, scenic beauty, and value-for-money luxury set it apart.

Though Egypt and Algeria attract interest, Morocco dominates with its seamless blend of tradition and modernity.

As UK travellers embrace fresh horizons, Morocco’s enhanced infrastructure and evolving offerings solidify its position as a premier global destination—captivating those craving adventure beyond the ordinary.

A food tour in Fes Medina offers the chance to sample genuine Fassi dishes prepared by local families and small vendors, rather than chain restaurants that cater mainly to tourists. As Chef Fatima often says,

Locals know best.

By joining a guided food tour, you can bypass the tourist traps and experience the real flavours of Fes.

Expert Guidance and Local Insight

Below is a table summarizing the key features of each tour:

What to Expect on a Fes Food Tour.

A Fes Medina food tour is more than just a culinary experience—it’s a deep cultural immersion.

Meeting Point

Most tours have a centrally located meeting point for ease of access. For example, many start at Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue Gate), a landmark that 95% of tours use as their starting point. This familiar spot makes it easy for travellers to find each other and begin their journey.

Food Samples and Generous Portions

Expect to enjoy generous portions of a wide variety of dishes. From savoury stews to sweet treats, each stop offers a taste of the diverse flavours that define Fassi cuisine. Many tours provide ample samples so you can try several dishes without feeling rushed.

Dietary Considerations

If you have dietary restrictions, inform your guide in advance. Most tours are flexible and can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free preferences. Clear communication with your guide ensures you have a safe and enjoyable dining experience.

Cultural Immersion

Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to visit artisan workshops, interact with local vendors, and hear stories behind each dish. This level of cultural immersion helps you understand not just what you’re eating, but the history and traditions behind it.

Tips for a Great Fes Food Tour Experience

To make the most of your food tour in Fes, consider these practical tips:

Book in Advance

Food tours in Fes are popular and fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. Booking your tour at least two weeks in advance increases your chances of securing a spot.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The medina’s streets are uneven and narrow. Wear comfortable shoes that can handle cobblestone paths and long walks through winding alleys.

Bring Cash

Many small vendors in the Medina may not accept credit cards. Bring enough Moroccan Dirham (MAD) in small denominations to pay for any extra treats or souvenirs you might want to purchase. As Fez tour guide Jamal advises, “Small denominations are best.”

Stay Hydrated

Exploring the Medina on foot can be tiring, so be sure to carry water with you. It’s important to stay refreshed as you enjoy the culinary delights along your route.

Ask Questions

Don’t hesitate to ask your guide about the history of Fassi cuisine or the stories behind the dishes. Engaging with your guide enriches your experience and gives you insider knowledge about the local food scene.

Beyond the Tour: Continuing Your Culinary Journey in Fes

A food tour is just the beginning of your culinary adventure in Fes. Here are additional ways to keep exploring the vibrant food culture:

Cooking Classes

Many riads and culinary schools in Fes offer cooking classes where you can learn how to prepare your favourite Fassi dishes. These classes allow you to take home not only memories, but also the skills to recreate Moroccan flavours in your own kitchen. Search online for cooking classes in Fes to find one that suits your schedule.

Visit Local Markets

Explore the souks and markets in Fes to see where the magic begins. The spice market and produce market, such as Souk Attarine, offer a firsthand look at the fresh ingredients used in Fassi cooking.

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and, last year, the Marrakech earthquake. the Festival of World Sacred Music is set to return for its 27th edition, taking place in Fez, Morocco, from May 24th to June 1st, 2024, under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

This year’s festival promises to be a spectacular celebration of spiritual diversity, featuring a wide range of sacred and spiritual music from around the world with the theme of The Quest for the Al-Andalus Spirit. This will focus on the peaceful coexistence between the Abrahamic faiths of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism during the Andalusian “Golden Age” from the early eighth century until the end of the thirteenth century. Today, the Kingdom of Morocco still stands as a shining example to the world of religious tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect.

A Rich History of Cultural Exchange.

Fez, the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco during the time of Al-Andalus and continuing to be so today, has a rich history of cultural exchange and the encouragement of intellectual pursuits. For centuries, it has been a centre for the meeting of minds and the sharing of ideas and knowledge, attracting philosophers, scientists, scholars, artists, and religious men and women from all across the globe. The city’s heritage is reflected in its architecture, with the imposing Bab Al Makina, the beautiful Jnan Sbil gardens, and the more intimate, family-run Dar Tazi serving as stunning backdrops for the festival’s events.

Celebrating the Sacred Through Music.

The festival is a celebration of the sacred and holy through music, dance, and poetry, featuring performances by renowned artists from around the world. Past performers have included Joan Baez, Patti Smith, Bjork, Ravi Shankar, and Youssou N’Dour, among many others. The festival’s artistic director has also been instrumental in producing extraordinary, multidisciplinary creations which are presented at the opening of the festival.

This year’s Creation is “Zyriab or the Fifth String”, which is a journey through the sources of inspiration for Andalusian music, between heaven and earth, mountains and palaces, all presented through music, dance, and acting. The performers in this saga are gathered from Armenia, India, Iran, Italy, Egypt, France, Spain, Syria, Uzbekistan and Morocco.

This unmissable performance will be taking place on May 24th at 9 pm at Bab Al Makina. Admission is 600 Dhs.

A Platform for Unknown Talent.

The festival not only showcases established artists but also provides a platform for lesser-known or unknown talent to be discovered. It prides itself on being a nursery for daring projects, freshly born from the imagination of adventurous musicians and poets. This year’s festival promises to be no exception, with diverse artistic performances, original creations, the ever-popular Sufi nights, and over 60 concerts and shows. The festival is keen to promote new homegrown and international talent.

The Spirit of Fez: A Global Phenomenon.

The festival has also spawned an international network for support and advertising, with the Spirit of Fez Inc. established in the United States in 2006. This network disseminates a musical program and a program of the forum throughout twenty cities, including New York at its famous Carnegie Hall. The spread of the “spirit of Fez” continues to inspire the creation of similar events and mobilizes up to 100,000 locals and international visitors who come to celebrate it.

A Message of Peace and Understanding.

The festival’s message of peace and understanding through music and the promotion of collaboration contributes to developing a more tolerant and open society. It is a testament to music’s power to unite people and transcend cultural and religious differences and boundaries. The festival’s theme this year, “The Quest for the Al-Andalus Spirit“, provides a unique opportunity for festival-goers to discover how women and men of all faiths have been influenced by the reach and historical impact of Al-Andalus, not only in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco but the wider Mediterranean basin for over twelve centuries.

A Unifying Event

Under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music and its Forum, which were set up in 1994 and 2001 respectively, come within the scholarly, artistic, and spiritual tradition of the city of Fez. The festival has been recognized by the United Nations as one of the most outstanding events that contributes to the dialogue between nations, religions, and cultures. It is a unifying event that brings together artists of world fame, newcomers, and a varied audience from all walks of life, sharing their quest for the sacred.

Morocco offers a wealth of experiences for tourist visitors; the imperial cities, desert adventures, mountains, and forests, but for something different more and more travellers are combining some of these by enjoying a hot air balloon ride over the Sahara desert for the ultimate thrill. It is one of the best experiences anyone can enjoy in Morocco. Hot air balloon rides in Morocco also make ideal surprise gifts for your partner or family.

Just imagine drifting under the azure sky with no engine or contact with the land far below. A frightening thought for some, an alluring proposition for others, and an unforgettable memory for all. The sense of freedom you feel when aloft is amazing. This can be a high point in anyone’s holiday to Morocco. And hot-air ballooning is actually the safest form of travel, fifty times safer than travelling by car!

In this featured article, we take a look at what we believe to be the ten best hot air balloon rides in Morocco.

N.B. With all these hot-air balloon rides if a flight is cancelled due to inclement weather you will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.

1. Ciel D’Afrique.

Ciel D’Afrique (African Sky) has been operating from Marrakech since 1990 and is thus the longest-established and best-known of the many companies offering hot-air balloon trips in Morocco.

Your adventure starts at 4 am when you should awaken and prepare for the exciting day ahead. You will be picked up at 5 am by your English-speaking driver and whisked away in a 4×4 to the take-off point, a forty-minute drive outside of the city. Here, you will meet up with your experienced international pilot and watch the hot-air balloons being inflated while you sip tea or coffee. This is quite noisy, but very interesting and hypnotic. After the balloons are fully inflated, you climb aboard the basket which will have a maximum of sixteen passengers.

After takeoff, you will enjoy the beautiful sight of the sun rising over the distant Atlas Mountains. Sometimes, the mornings are a little cloudy, but as your balloon slowly rises higher and the sun burns brighter, the clouds will magically disappear. The pilot will rotate the balloon to give you 360* panoramic views as multiple colours spread across the sky. Drifting on over tiny Berber villages in the pink, brown, and orange landscape, after about an hour, your balloon will slowly descend for a slightly bumpy, a little frightening, but very safe landing, as the Ciel D’Afrique pilots are all very experienced veterans.

Watch as your pretty, hot-air balloon is slowly deflated, and then board the 4×4 for the drive back to basecamp and a Berber desert nomad tent made by women from a local village in the traditional manner. Here you will enjoy a hearty Moroccan breakfast of pastries, bread, and fruit and receive your certificate for the flight as a souvenir. The basic hot-air ballooning package ends here, with the 4×4 returning you to your accommodation in Marrakech by about 9 am.

But Ciel D’Afrique also offers an extended full-day adventure. Quad-biking and horseriding are additional extras available on request to add to your Marrakech experience. Also available as extras are hammams and massages, please ask when booking for these. You spend the day playing games and chatting before experiencing the breathtaking sunset with the sparkling lights of Marrakech in the distance. After the sun has gone down, wonder at the millions of stars and enjoy a Berber meal by the cracking campfire.

Ciel D’Afrique makes your unforgettable hot-air balloon ride, just the beginning of a full day’s unique experience.

Tourism to Morocco is increasing exponentially, after a brief slow-down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2025, Morocco welcomed 19.8 million visitors, beating the previous record. 2026 is predicted to be bigger by far as more and more people from all over the world come to enjoy the delights of Morocco.

Most tourists fly to Morocco, usually to Casablanca or Marrakech, but more flights are arriving in Tangier. Tangier Med Port is now the busiest commercial port in the Mediterranean, while Tangier Ville is only a 45-minute trip from Spain across the Straits of Gibraltar so that Tangier is packed with tourists arriving from across Europe and elsewhere, arriving through Spain, crossing the Med by ferry direct to Morocco or indirectly through the Spanish enclaves of Sebta and Melilla. Ferries are also becoming more regular from Gibraltar, France, and Italy.

Folks come from Spain sometimes just for a day trip to Tanger or to begin a longer adventure exploring Morocco and the Moroccans are there awaiting them.

So the question on many people’s lips is; “Is Tangier safe?”.

This article will answer the question in some detail, but, spoiler alert!, the short answer is, “Yes, pretty much”.

So here are some questions we are often asked regarding safety in Tangier, together with up-to-date information and answers

Is Tangier Safe To Visit?

Tangier is safer to visit today than it has ever been. Nowhere in the world is 100% safe at all times, but Tangier is comparatively safe to visit. An increased and visible police and security presence is noticeable to visitors, helping them feel reassured and able to understand that the Moroccan King, the government, and regional authorities take the safety of tourists very seriously indeed. It is still recommended to take sensible precautions and be vigilant, however. To begin, you should ensure that you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you arrive in Morocco.

The Travel Advisory listing for Tangier currently stands at Level 2 which is “Increased Caution Advised”

General Safety Tips

Take note of specific recommendations or guidelines from local authorities, your tour company, or accommodations. Check for updates just before you travel.

Always be alert and aware of your current surroundings.

Ensure your personal belongings are secure, consider a moneybelt, and don’t be ostentatious with electronic equipment, personal jewellery, or flashing your money about. Beware of pickpockets, especially in crowded places and on public transport.

It is essential to respect local customs, such as Ramadan, and dress modestly in more conservative areas and religious sites.

Avoid walking about at night time, particularly if you are alone or in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas.

Use official, reputable tour companies, and modes of transport, and be cautious with taxis, ride-shares, and Airbnb or couch-sharing services.

Is Public Transport in Tangier Safe to Use?

Tangier has an excellent bus service and is the terminal for train travel going elsewhere in Morocco. Thus the trains and buses are used frequently by locals and tourists alike. The trains and buses are well-maintained and the trains have guards while the buses are equipped with CCTV cameras which are constantly being monitored to ensure the safety of passengers which the Tangier authorities take very seriously. Buses are cheap and the most used transport by the locals. Train fares are very reasonable and both methods of transport are considered to be safe ways to travel.

But always be mindful of your possessions as pickpockets are the greatest security threat on buses particularly during the rush hour when there is often standing room only and the vehicles will be crowded.

Once, when a Moroccan friend of mine was on a bus, a young man tapped her on the shoulder and offered a mobile phone to her. She looked at the device and said in surprise, “That’s my phone!”

“Yes”, replied the man.”I am a thief and stole your phone but it is rubbish so I don’t want it.”!

Otherwise, the buses are quite safe and passengers and staff will usually be happy to help if you need any local information or want to know which is your stop.

Is It Safe To Drive in Tangier?

Many tourists take their cars to Tangier, either by ferry from mainland Spain or from the Spanish enclaves of Sebta (Cueta) or Melilla. Others rent a car on arrival in the city to have more freedom to explore Morocco.

The road quality in Tangier is generally very good, but Moroccan drivers are often crazy. Drivers will often ignore traffic laws, drive too quickly whilst jumping from lane to lane to overtake and cars will stop beyond the traffic lights to gain a few metres advantage but are then unable to see the lights change and have to rely on vehicles behind blaring their horns to signal a green light. Pedestrians walk in the road and cross at random points as drivers rarely stop for zebra crossings and motorbike riders often ignore even red lights.

Additionally, note the signage may be only in Arabic in some cases and that the speed limits and distances are set in kilometres per hour not miles per hour.

The key is therefore to drive defensively. There are many police checkpoints, so always have your documentation on hand. Ensure you have full insurance coverage. Check all the local driving laws and regulations.

Driving in Tangier can be a harrowing experience, but if you drive thinking that everyone else on the road is an idiot, you should be fine.

Are Families Safe Visiting Tangier?

The Moroccan people adore children and will spoil them rotten at every opportunity. Even thieves and pickpockets rarely target infants. The tourist sector including hotels and riads will go out of their way to ensure families have a happy and safe time in Tangier. Increased and visible police and security services help to make families feel secure exploring the city. The city is very family-friendly and there are many places to see and activities to share with the whole family The beaches are ideal and fun for everyone.

Just be sensible and follow the usual safety guidelines and you’ll be fine.

Are Women Safe Visiting Tangier?

Sometimes female travellers will worry about visiting Morocco, especially if they travel alone or with other women. Morocco is, after all, a Muslim country but it is very respectful to people who respect the local way of life, and Moroccan women themselves often choose not to wear a hijab and wear modern, western fashions.

Tangier is generally safe for female travellers, but caution is advised, be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t go wandering about in dimly lit areas at night, don’t be ostentatious with your mobile devices or jewellery, keep your bags and money secure and dress modestly in more conservative areas or religious sites. I have met many women who have had a wonderful time visiting Tangier.

Is it Safe Travelling Alone in Tangier?

Solo travellers have been visiting Tangier to experience the hippy culture for decades. Those days may be gone, but solo travellers still come and are pretty safe when they follow the usual basic safety precautions; staying in well-lit areas after dark, keeping alert at all times, and not flashing about expensive electronic devices or bulging wallets.

I have been alone in Tangier on several occasions, and, apart from one time when a guy followed me for an hour begging for money, offering me hashish, a hotel, a taxi and to carry my bags, I never had any problems. Even that one guy was in no way threatening, just annoying.

Is Aibnb Safe in Tangier?

Yes, Airbnb in Tangier is rated as very safe indeed. It can be a great way of finding safe, convenient, and comfortable accommodation in the city.

As always with this service it is wise to plan ahead and be cautious. Read the reviews and check out the ratings of the host and accommodation. The experience of previous visitors can be telling. Contact the host directly before you book to get the feel of the person and ask any questions that you may have. Their ability and willingness to respond and how they interact with you can be useful guidelines. When you arrive, always check the safety and security of the place; fire alarms and extinguishers, locks for doors and windows, is there CCTV, and is someone always on the premises?

If you do have any concerns whatsoever, then contact the Airbnb helpline/ customer support which is very effective at finding solutions to your problems.

Is Uber Safe In Tangier?

Unfortunately, Uber pulled out of Morocco in 2018 due to what it described as the “Taxi Mafia”. But not to worry, Uber’s Middle Eastern subsidiary, Careem, is still operating in Tangier, as well as another taxi app called Roby. These are considered to be safe in Tangier. But always verify the driver’s and the vehicle’s details before entering the car, and check the driver’s photo ID, license plate and number match the information on the app. Tell somebody else the details of your ride before you travel for extra security.

Is It Safe To Live in Tangier?

I have lived in Fes for nearly twenty years but know several expats who live in Tangier. More ex-pats live in Tangier than in Fes because the Spanish move there due to its proximity to Spain and the Spanish colonisation, the British because of their shared history with the city, and Americans because of the literary and hippy connections. They tell me it is a nice and safe place to reside, especially in the last decade or two since the government and local authorities improved security and tightened up on law enforcement. Crime rates have decreased over this period and are still going down.

Like anywhere else, crime does still occur, particularly petty thefts, burglary, and scamming, but being vigilant and cautious should reduce the risks greatly.

Is it Safe To Use Drugs in Tangier?

NO!

Morocco is the number one supplier of marijuana to Europe. It is commonly called hash or hashish here, but it will often be offered to foreigners as “chocolate”, “good shit” or “ would you like to go to a party”.

However, the use of hashish and other such substances is illegal in Morocco, and if you are caught in possession you can expect a hefty fine and a lengthy spell in one of Morocco’s not very pleasant prisons. The days of the “Marrakech Express” are long gone and the authorities take drug use very seriously. There are also many scams, some of them involving the police where you can be sold some hash and immediately after get stopped by the police and arrested with a reward going to the seller who informed the authorities! The use, sale, distribution, import, and export of drugs are all illegal. The safety and quality of drugs in Morocco are also suspect; many drugs are mixed with other chemicals to reduce costs to the dealers. These can have worse-than-usual health consequences.

Using drugs also puts you more at risk of accidents and falling victim to other crimes as your awareness will be lessened.

So, no, it is not safe to do drugs in Tangier.

Don’t do it.

Top Five Scams and Rip-Offs in Tangier.

As with any popular tourist city in the world, there are always those who will take advantage of naive tourists with more money than sense. So be sensible. Tangier is not a hot-bed of crime, but it does occur so here are the Top Five Scams and Rip-Offs in Tangier to watch out for:

Pickpockets. Sadly, these are not unknown and some of them are so good you won’t notice you’ve been robbed until hours later. Use secure money belts and keep a close guard of your pockets and bags, on buses and In crowded, bustling streets especially in medinas and at prayer times, pickpockets will be present. Keep alert!

Overpricing. Another easy way to lose a lot of money. Some unscrupulous vendors will see a tourist a mile away and assume that all foreigners, especially Japanese, Americans, and Western Europeans, are loaded with money. They will judge you in part on the quality of your clothes, your shoes, and your watch, phone, and jewellery and start the bargaining process with a price based on your appearance. Dress casually and wear sneakers or scuffed shoes, keeping expensive items to a minimum and hidden. And always haggle; the price will be inflated to begin anyway, as that is the time-honoured way of conducting business here.

Fake or poor-quality souvenirs. Just be cautious, some items are not what they claim to be. Fake watches, counterfeit Brand Name items, and fake fossils are examples of what to look out for, especially in tourist hot spots. Always check the items carefully before purchasing.

Faux Guides. Official Guides wear a suit or traditional djellaba and have an authorised badge in plain view. Fake guides, called faux guides in Morocco, will often be as informed, professional, and friendly as a real guide, but will take you to shops and restaurants where they get a cut, so they are not necessarily the best places. They also can charge an arm and a leg for their services. Ask for accreditation or trust reputable tour operators. Some better genuine guides are listed on online blogs about Morocco or in tourist guidebooks such as Lonely Planet.

Taxi Scams. The majority of taxi drivers are decent, honest, hard-working folks, but a few are not. Some will overcharge. If you are getting a Grand Taxi to another city, there should be a price list posted publicly at the taxi station so ask to see this. Always agree on the fare in advance. The local, intercity Petit Taxis, pale blue with a yellow racing stripe in Tangier will have a fixed-price meter. Ensure it is switched on and reset at the start of your journey. If the driver says the meter is broken, he is probably up to no good, so get another taxi. Some taxi drivers will also go by a longer route than is necessary. I always tell the taxi driver that it’s nice to be back in Tangier again and I know and love the city. Never fails.

In Conclusion.

In summary, then, tourists can be reasonably well assured of having a splendid time in the beautiful, cultural, and historic city of Tangier as it is comparatively safe to visit. The government, at both national and regional levels, has put a not inconsiderable amount of time, effort, and money into tightening security and improving safety and a very visible police, security, and military presence helps make visitors feel secure.

Take note of our advice, stay informed of the latest local updates, and always be cautious, sensible, and aware of your surroundings and you should enjoy a happy visit to the wonderful Moroccan city of Tangier.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS:

It is recommended that you write these emergency numbers down and program them into your mobile phone before you travel.

We very much hope that you will never need them, but it is wise to keep them handy – Just in case!

Police: 190

Ambulance: 15

Fire Service: 15

Tourist Police: +212 539 32 23 61

Tourist Board (Tangier): +212 539 93 36 10

Morocco is, by and large, a safe travel destination for tourists and millions visit the exotic country every year without any problems. However, like anywhere in the world, certain health problems do occur and it is sensible to take precautions before, and during your stay.

So, without further ado, here are our top twelve tips to avoid getting sick in Morocco.

Top 12 Tips To Avoid Getting Sick in Morocco:

INOCULATIONS.

Before you go, get a medical check-up and ensure you have up-to-date inoculations for the following:

chickenpox.

diphtheria

tetanus.

pertussis.

influenza (flu).

MMR (measles, mumps, rubella).

polio.

shingles.

Covid-19 is recommended but no longer compulsory.

Hepatitis A is recommended for all visitors to Morocco over the age of one. Hepatitis B is also recommended. A typhoid vaccination is recommended for rural areas. Tuberculosis (TB) is not on the recommended vaccinations list for Morocco which is odd as it is on the increase across the whole country and I caught it and spent 107 days in hospital in isolation. Be careful! People cough and sneeze without covering their mouths or noses, they spit in the street and it’s all a bit disgusting, selfish and dangerous.

No vaccinations or health certificates are required to enter Morocco, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you are on any medication take a supply to last the duration of your stay in Morocco. Not all medication available on prescription or over the counter is available in Morocco. Ask your doctor to write a note stating what medications you need to use, what they are used for, the quantity that you need to take and to confirm it is for your personal use.

INSURANCE.

Make certain that you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes overseas health coverage including medical evacuation. Your government is unlikely to cover the costs for you. If you can’t afford full cover then do not travel. If you are uninsured and the worst happens, you may have to pay the doctor/ hospital in Morocco thousands in advance before they treat you.

INSECTS.

Take an insect repellant. Insect-borne diseases are uncommon in most of Morocco, but typus and leishmaniasis do occur and can be common in the southeast of the country in particular, especially in the rainy season. Here is also the main malaria zone, though the disease is rare, cases are increasing. Ensure your accommodation is insect-proof where at all possible. Wear pale-coloured, loose-fitting clothes that cover your arms and legs. Bedbugs do occur in some cheaper accommodation.

WATER AND FOOD.

Drink bottled water and boil tap water. Make sure the lids on the bottled water are sealed. The water in Moroccan cities is usually potable, but in some rural areas, especially in the south of the country, this is not necessarily the case. Even in the cities, it should be remembered that your gut flora and fauna are different to those found in Morocco and, as your body adapts there may be some stomach and intestinal issues. I have become ill this way only once in eighteen years here, despite drinking the tap water. On that occasion, it was due to an unclean hotel swimming pool. Typically, the pool was drained, cleaned and refilled the following day. It’s unwise to swim in rivers or ponds.

Though Morocco isn’t as bad as to cause the common and horrible “Delhi Belly”, or “Montezuma’s Revenge”, perhaps more comparable to “Spanish Tummy”. diarrhoea due to bacteria in the water and unhygienically prepared food are the principal causes of tourists becoming sick in the country. Be careful of raw or undercooked meat, especially poultry and fish. Fish stalls will often keep throwing tap water over their fish to keep them moist, clean and shiny. Even salads are washed in the local water thus a potential health risk. For the same reason, ice cubes should be avoided.

Boil water for at least a minute and allow to cool before pouring into your clean water bottles.

Water filtration methods are also acceptable, as are purification tablets.

Carbonated drinks and the local beer are safe.

BLACK HENNA.

Do not get a black henna tattoo. The chemicals in them can sometimes irritate the skin and even lead to permanent scarring. The orange/ brown henna is fine.

RABIES.

Keep away from dogs and cats. Rabies is not uncommon in Morocco and recently a European tourist died after contracting the disease after being bitten by a cat he was stroking. If you are scratched or bitten by a dog, cat, bat, or other mammal whilst in Morocco, seek urgent medical attention. Rabies treatment is available in the country. Keep an eye on your children, they love to play with cuddly animals.

HAND-WASHING.

Wash your hands thoroughly before eating. The Moroccans do this themselves and it is very sensible. If there is no soap and water available, use a hand sanitiser. Make sure the sanitiser contains at least 60% alcohol.

SICK PEOPLE.

Stay away from people who are clearly sick! Unless you are Florence Nightingale.

BODILY FLUIDS.

Avoid the exchange of bodily fluids. Not just through sex, but kissing, vomit, blood, urine and faeces. Use in-date latex condoms. AIDS, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases are present in Morocco. Don’t inject drugs and if you must, don’t share needles. This also includes needles for bodily piercings, acupuncture, or tattooing. Try not to get too drunk as when intoxicated you are more likely to make stupid decisions. If you do need medical or dental treatment, ensure the equipment is clean, sanitised, or disinfected.

SLIP, SLAP, SLOP!

Morocco has a very long summer and the sun can be extremely fierce, The UV index is often very high and there is a big risk of sunburn, sunstroke, dehydration and prickly heat.

Slip on a long-sleeved shirt or blouse.

Slap on a broad-brimmed hat.

Slop on lots of high-factor sunscreen. An SPF of +50 is ideal. Reapply every two hours and straight away after swimming. And don’t forget the kids.

A decent quality pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes.

Drink lots of water.

Try to get a room and transport with air-conditioning.

Stay out of the sun from 11am to 3pm where possible.

Remember that UV radiation is not stopped by clouds and you can get burned even when swimming or even in the snow.

AIR POLLUTION.

Some urban areas, in particular Casablanca have terrible levels of toxins in the air that you breathe. This can exacerbate any respiratory problems that you might have, such as bronchitis or asthma, Those travellers with such problems should take a supply of inhalers and perhaps a face-mask.

VENOMOUS ANIMALS.

Snakes, scorpions and rats are also present in the country. Most of these animals are not particularly venomous, but a few are. Be careful walking amongst rocks and if you are in a region known for snakes and scorpions, wear sturdy boots. The majority of tourists will never even see any of these animals you will be glad to know.

For all souvenir aficionados, Morocco is a shopaholic’s dream come true. One may arrive with empty suitcases and enjoy filling them with exotic, colourful clothes, jewellery and beauty products. For the craft-minded, there are souks that have an abundance of fabrics, tassels, beads, sequins and braiding to take home and adorn oneself or to transform one’s decor.

Fabulous light fitments, crockery and glassware which can easily be shipped internationally by the vendors can be found aplenty. Leather goods are also an excellent buy. Many come to Morocco stock up on locally made leather products like boots and handbags and see the tanneries in action. Browsing the market stalls and bargaining can be great fun. And there are plenty of smaller goods that make great souvenirs from Morocco as well; keyrings, fridge magnets, mugs and postcards are all cheap as chips!

Many of these goods are much cheaper than the prices in Europe or the USA. And don’t forget that you are contributing much-needed money to the local economy.

And talking of price:

HAGGLE!

The byword here is “haggle” Always bargain over the price, even if the vendor has a “fixed price”. Whatever the seller may ask for, offer at least fifty percent less as a starting point, and then work your way to a price that you are both happy with. Pretending to walk away is a good tactic as is having a maximum amount that you are prepared to pay.

Don’t go above this. If you’re looking to buy a more pricey item like a carpet, the merchant may invite you to take a glass of tea with him. It’s fine to accept if you are serious about a possible purchase. Sometimes vendors may appear to be angry. Just leave, and if you can go back the next day, you will be greeted like a long-lost brother.

When all is done, you should think that you have come away with a bargain and the vendor will have made a profit so both parties should be happy. Look up the “Life of Brian” haggling scene on YouTube to get a flavour of what to expect!

MONEY.

Note that most Moroccan shops and market stalls don’t take credit cards, so make sure you have lots of cash. The Moroccan currency is the Dirham. 10 Dhs is about equal to one US dollar. Always check the prices in a few different establishments where possible to get a better idea of a reasonable price.

Prices in bigger cities are usually higher than those in smaller towns and rural areas and check out side streets and alleyways for bargains as tourist hotspots and main streets are generally more expensive.

If you are unable to visit Morocco at this time, don’t fret as Morocco souvenirs online are easy to find and can be reasonably priced if you look around.

So let’s have a look at our recommended The 20 Best Souvenirs to Buy in Morocco:

1. Kaftans, Djellabas and other Clothing.

Many of the kaftans, djellabas and dresses produced in Moroocco are hand-made, embroidered by hand and quite exquisite. And with a bit of haggling can be exceedingly good value. Tunic tops and blouses are other good buys. One must be careful with brightly coloured items as they are often not colour-fast so should be washed separately on the first couple of occasions.

For men, there are djellabas, which are kaftans with a hood, hats and thobes, a sort of long dress. I wear a thobe all the time in the summer, it’s so cool! But I’m not sure I’d wear it in the UK or the USA, so think about practicality. If you have time, you can have a suit or other item tailor-made at a good price.

You can also purchase baggy pants with a drawstring. These are loose-fitting, light and very comfortable. Harem trousers are also available.

As well as the souks, check out the boutiques in the new town for contemporary fashions and styles that still utilize traditional designs.

Best Places to Buy: Everywhere and anywhere! Regional variations occur. Casablanca for modern boutiques.

Price Guide: A basic kaftan from 50 to 100 Dhs.150 Dhs for a more elaborate one. Shirt or blouse; 100 Dhs. A very intricate dress might cost you 2,000 to 20,000 Dhs!

2. Turbans, Headscarves and Hats.

Headscarves or hijabs can be purchased anywhere in a wide variety of styles and colours. Headscarves and turbans are particularly recommended for desert treks. The vendors will happily teach you how to tie a turban correctly. Blue is the traditional colour for these except in Merzouga where black scarves are worn, brightly embroidered. Other colours are aimed at tourists.

Brightly coloured, broad-brimmed hats with tassels are unique to the Tangier area, Fezzes are a great purchase in Fes, of course.

Best Places to Buy: Headscarves – anywhere, turbans – Merzouga.

Price Guide: 30 to 70 Dhs for a headscarf/hijab or turban.

3. Babouche.

Moroccan pointy leather slippers. Very comfortable and cheap, great for casual wear indoors and out. Yellow is the most popular traditional colour with Moroccans, but other colours are available. Don’t buy the ones with glued-on soles as they quickly fall to pieces. Babouche make ideal souvenirs from Morocco as they are cheap, essentially Moroccan and easy to slot into a suitcase.

Best Places to Buy: Fes, Rissani., Marrakech where there is a whole street named after them.

Price Guide: From 50 to 80 Dhs.

4. Leather Clothing and Poufs.

Leather clothing shops are found all over the country and provide excellent souvenirs The 20 Best Souvenirs to Buy in Morocco. It’s worth visiting the Chouara tanneries in Fes to see how the products are produced by traditional methods much the same as they were hundreds of years ago and then look around the dozens of shops that surround the courtyard for a bargain or two.

Different animal hides are used to produce the leather including cow, sheep, goat, horse and camel. The smell in the tanneries is awful, so you may be offered a sprig of mint to hold under your nose. Full-length leather coats, brightly coloured jackets, trousers, belts, wallets, purses, handbags, shoes and slippers, all at very reasonable prices if you haggle. Unusually for Morocco, the Chouara tannery does accept credit cards.

The lovely leather poufs that you see in the souks look much too large to take home but, fear not, when you buy one it comes unstuffed and easy to fit flat in your suitcase. So choose the design and colour scheme that you prefer and the shopkeeper will be happy to provide you with an empty one that you can stuff at home. You will see these all over the world in stores, but they are naturally much cheaper in Morocco.

5. Woven Baskets and Straw Bags.

Very fashionable at the moment, there is a wide variety of different styles of straw bags and woven baskets available across Morocco. Whole shops can be dedicated to these which come in different sizes, colours, shapes and functions. Some vendors can even add sequins, tassels, pompoms or embroidery at your request, or you can buy these extras separately and do it yourself at home. Bread baskets are large wool and straw woven trays used in restaurants and riads and may be plain or brightly coloured.

Best Place to Buy: Marrakech especially at the souk near the Cafe de Espices and Tangier.

Price Guide: 100 Dhs for a large bag. Bread basket – 40 to 50 Dhs.

6. Berber Rugs, Carpets and Blankets.

You can find woven Berber rugs, carpets and blankets for sale all across North Africa, but we believe that the Moroccan ones are the best. Found in traditional and modern designs in a plethora of colours, the quality is judged on the type of fabric, the dyes used and the number of knots per square metre. Many of them are works of art. The prices can be astronomical, but you pay for quality and these pieces are hand-crafted on ancient looms often by equally ancient women with decades of experience. This is where haggling skills are really important, Bargaining for rugs and carpets can take a while over a glass of mint tea, but it is possible to reduce the starting price greatly. And remember, a good quality rug will last a lifetime.

One word of warning; keep an eye on your rug all the way through the transaction until you leave with it. A common scam is for the vendor to wrap a cheaper rug for you when you’re not looking.

Incredible, unique, brightly-coloured woollen blankets can be found in almost every shop in Chefchaouen. Often blue like the walls of the town, these make wonderful wall decorations as well as perfect gifts. They also produce shawls in similar styles and colours.

Best Places to Buy: Berber villages, the back streets of Marrakech for carpets and rugs, Chefchaouen for blankets.

Price Guide: Be prepared to remortgage your house for a large, high-quality carpet, but smaller, lesser-quality rugs and blankets can be reasonably priced. A cheaper rug will be about 1,000 Dhs, but a really decent one will cost you a few thousand Dhs.

7. Lanterns and Lamps.

Some shops in the larger cities sell only locally made lanterns and lamps. Some are freestanding and some are for hanging. Many are made from beaten brass or pewter and peppered with tiny holes. Some have glass and others are just metal. Be careful as some of the cheaper lamps are made from metals that rust and discolour.

Aluminium framed lanterns are particularly affordable but tend to bend easily. Ask the shopkeeper to place a light inside the lamps in which you are interested so that you can see the amount of light and the beautiful glow it produces. Compare the very variable quality of the metalwork.

Best Places to Buy: Fes, Meknes, Marrakech.

Price Guide: 100 Dhs for a cheap lamp or lantern. 200 to 500 Dhs for a good quality metal and glass lamp. 300 Dhs for a metal lamp up to 2,000 Dhs for large standing lamps.

8. Metalwork.

Hand-hammered metalwork can be seen being produced in the Seffarine Square in Fes and other souks across the country. It’s interesting to see the craftsmen at work but the noise is deafening. Many pieces are decorative etched metal but there are also practical items such as teapots, bowls and trays. Machine-stamped objects are also available and are cheaper. It’s fairly easy to spot the difference just by looking. Machine-manufactured pieces are uniform whereas hand-hammered items are a bit more uneven but somehow much more charming. Items are made from brass, bronze, pewter, copper and even silver,

Best Places to Purchase: Fes and Sefrou.

Price Guide: Dependent on quality and the type of metal used.

9. Silver Jewellery.

Moroccan men and women love to wear silver jewellery, especially men as Islam forbids them to wear gold. For women, rings and necklaces are commonplace plus earrings and hair ornaments. The prices are good as Morocco is the leading producer of silver ores in Africa. The Jewish people in the cities began to produce the most beautiful and intricate silver items and after the majority of the Jews left for Israel, the Muslim Moroccans have successfully taken over the craft.

Beware as there are a lot of fakes about. Silver doesn’t smell metallic, so if your item does, it’s probably an imitation.

Best Places to Buy: Medinas of the bigger cities.

Price Guide: Very variable, pay what you think the item is worth to you.

10. Fossils and Crystals.

Hundreds of palaeontologists, geologists, gemologists and amateur fossil and crystal collectors come to Morocco every year for the wealth of excellent quality and rare fossil and mineral specimens the country produces. Thousands more purchase online. And for the passing tourist, these pieces provide something different and beautiful.

Everything from a polished ammonite to a dinosaur tooth can be found here, Haggle and you’ll get a price a fraction of what you’d pay online or in fossil shops and fairs in other countries. You can even buy washbasins and fountains made of fossils if you want something totally different. Check out the preparation centres and wholesalers in Erfoud for amazing pieces and roadside stalls throughout the Atlas Mountains for bargains.

But be careful; there are a lot of fakes and composites around as well.

Best Places to Buy: Erfoud, Villages and roadside stalls in the south and the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech.

Price Guide: From 20 Dhs for a small ammonite or common trilobite up to thousands for a beautifully prepped specimen or something rare or large.

11. Ceramics

Ceramic and pottery shops can be found in all the medinas and markets in Morocco and exhibit a huge range of products. I like to visit the potteries in Ain Nockbi, a suburb of Fes, where you can watch the products being made, purchase bargains and even have something made to order if you have the time.

Plates, cups, mugs, bowls, tajines, tiles, ashtrays; earthenware, plain, two-tone, or brightly coloured, each region of the country has a different style and favoured colour scheme. Tajines are very Moroccan. Both the dish they’re cooked in and the food have the same name. They are earthenware bowls with a cone-shaped top. If the top has a hole in the centre, it is practical but if not it is purely decorative. They can be plain or brightly coloured.

As well as the potteries, there are large wholesalers which offer products cheaper than most of the shops. The shopkeepers usually wrap your purchases well, but always ensure you have wrapping yourself as some of these products are very fragile and we don’t want that sinking feeling one gets on returning home to find your prized plate is smashed to bits.

You will also see a lot of beautiful ceramic tiles in some shops. These tiles are used by the Moroccans for floors and walls and you see them everywhere. It takes ten years as an apprentice before you are considered to be a master tile maker and these artists produce the most gorgeous designs. The tiles have to be made upside down and then sealed, so it takes memory as well as skill to remember the designs and shapes that you are creating. Seeing this process in action is amazing and a tile or two make excellent souvenirs to buy in Morocco.

Best Places to Buy: For ceramics: Fes, Meknes, Safi and Rabat. For tiles: Ain Nokbi, Fes and Tetouan.

Price Guide: Small ceramic items from 20 Dhs, big ones 200-300 Dhs. Tagines 20 to 100 Dhs.

Tiles can be hundreds of dirhams due to the time and craftsmanship that goes into them.

12. Argan Oil.

Argan oil is produced from nuts of the Argania tree found only in southwest Morocco. Goats often climb the trees to eat the nuts and this is quite comical to behold. They then pass the nuts which are collected by the local people or the people pick the fruit and extract the nuts which are then roasted to extract the oil.

In the past, this was all done slowly in small villages but then large corporations arrived with oil presses destroying the economy of the Berber people of the region. Thankfully, the King ordered government aid and along with NGOs they have provided the equipment needed for local women and formed cooperatives to bring the much-needed cash back to the villages.

Argan oil is said to be healthier than olive oil when used for culinary purposes and it is great for dipping bread and drizzling on pasta. A different variety is also in skincare and to strengthen hair. You will need to specify which type you require; culinary or cosmetic.

The quality varies and can be determined by texture, colour and aroma. A good product should be thick, yellow and have a nutty aroma. There are also argan soaps and hand creams available,

Best Places to Buy: Villages in the Agadir, Essaouira and Marrakech areas and those cities.

Price Guide: 75 to 150 Dhs for 100 ml of cosmetic argan oil, 250 Dhs for a litre of good quality cooking oil.

13. Rose Water and Rose Oil.

On the second weekend in May (usually) in the small town of Keelat-M’Gouna in the Dades Valley, there is held the annual Festival Of Roses. Rose water and rose oil are produced that will keep your linen smelling fresh for weeks and are great as a perfume and for aromatherapy too. They make ideal souvenirs from Morocco but can be quite expensive as it takes 10,000 roses to make 5ml. Of rose oil. The products can be bought all year around all over Morocco, but is cheaper in the Dades Valley.

Best Places to Buy: Dades Valley.

Price Guide: 250 Dhs for a 10 ml bottle.

14. Artisanal Soap and Cosmetics.

Moroccan artisanal black soap feels wonderful on the skin. High in alkalis and vitamin E, they are made from olive oil and olives and have a gel-like consistency when wet. They are healthy, cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising. To exfoliate, Moroccans use the soap with a kessa, a rough cloth that is rubbed over the skin ten minutes after the soap has been washed off, This is also used in the hammams.

Other handmade soaps are made with added argan oil, lavender, jasmine, orange blossom water, or rosemary and smell wonderful.

Ghassoul is a cosmetic made from mineral clay and has been used by Moroccan women for centuries to cleanse the skin.

Kohl is a black eyeliner which is very much part of Moroccan culture.

Best Places to Buy: Cosmetic shops, hammams and souks all across Morocco.

Price Guide: 20 to 30 Dhs for a bar.

15. Tea, Teapots and Tea Glasses.

Tea is the National Drink of Morocco and is served everywhere in tall glasses, Poured from height to mix in oxygen, often with a lot of sugar and a sprig of mint it is delicious and refreshing. The teapots are often hand-crafted from metal and can be works of art in themselves, resembling a genie’s lamp. Moroccan hospitality will usually include offering a pot of tea and tea is served for family and friends.

The teapots make great souvenirs from Morocco as does the tea itself. There are also tea shops that sell a variety of loose-leaf green tea and packets and tins of dried tea. A set of tea glasses can also be beautiful, though fragile. Beldi Glass is a good brand.

Best Places to Buy: Everywhere in Morocco.

Price Guide: Really cheap! A small bag of tea is about 20 Dhs. Teapots from 150 to 300 Dhs, Etched bowls and plates 100 to 500 Dhs. Plain metalwork is naturally cheaper than etched products.

16. Spices and Dry Goods.

The multi-coloured, cone-shaped mounds on top of barrels full of spice in the spice shops of Morocco are beautiful in themselves and the aromas are gorgeous. Spices are considerably cheaper in Morocco than in Europe or the USA and the flavour and quality are higher. You can ask the proprietor of the outlet to grind the spices fresh for you and they make superb souvenirs of Morocco as they take up barely any space in your luggage. Saffron, ras al hanout (top of the shop), cumin, cinnamon, white pepper, cayenne, ginger, paprika, sesame seeds, aniseed and turmeric are amongst the best buys.

Saffron is orange to yellow at the base and deep red at the tip. If you see it entirely deep red it has been dyed. It should also look like a small flower with a stalk that splits into two or three and is flared in appearance, It should smell slightly musty.

Ras al hanout is the Moroccan special made with ten or more different herbs and spices and even includes dried rose petals!

Then the dried goods retailers have excellent value walnuts, almonds and figs.

But beware of some of these shops in tourist areas as they often overcharge, Try to shop where the locals do.

Best Places to Buy: Generally everywhere in Morocco. But where they grow and are in season is preferable when possible. So almonds in the spring up north, saffron from Tailouine, etc.

Price Guide: Saffron 40 – 80 Dhs for a gram. For 100 grams; Ras al hanout 40 Dhs, Turmeric cumin, paprika 20 Dhs, Ginger, pepper, cinnamon 15 Dhs, Dried Mint and others 10 Dhs.

17. Olives, Dates and Sweets.

Some shops sell only dates and sometimes figs and there is a huge variety of types, flavours, stickiness, sweetness and price! Other retailers specialise in olives, I like them with a little harissa (spicy, red paste) added to the bag. Buy the olives and dates close to when you leave, if possible, for maximum freshness!

Sweets/candy are delicious and cheap, The nougat, plain, or with nuts or honey, often brightly coloured with natural ingredients can be gift-wrapped and make an ideal souvenir of Morocco.

Best places to Buy: Olives just about anywhere, dates also but preferably in the south where they grow. Nougat in Casablanca and Marrakech.

Price Guide: Very cheap.

18. Wooden Boxes.

The speciality in half the shops in Essaouira medina is wooden trinket/jewellery boxes and puzzle boxes made from the local Thuya wood, polished and often inlaid with mother of pearl, lemonwood, cedar, or bone. Thuya is a bush that is indigenous to Morocco and grows in abundance in the Essaouira region.

Because so many shops are competing with each other, it is quite easy to get a bargain if you haggle and move from store to store,

The puzzle boxes provide great fun trying to discover how to open them, which bits to push or slide in which order to reveal the key to open the lid.

Best Place to Buy: Essaouira Medina, Agadir, Marrakech.

Price Guide: From 20 to 100 Dhs or more depending on the size, quality, materials used, or complexity of the puzzle boxes.

19. Musical Instruments.

In the medinas of Morocco and in villages especially in the south you can find the occasional shop or stall selling musical instruments. Some are indigenous Berber instruments and some were introduced by the Arabs. Most sellers are happy to play for you or even give you a lesson. The Arabic guitar called the oud can be purchased anywhere in Morocco but the Berber instruments are usually found in the south.

Hand drums are ubiquitous, fun to play and come in a range of sizes. These are played in Morocco’s festivals, weddings and other celebrations. Gnawa hand and finger cymbals are also popular and inexpensive purchases. Inexpensive, simple wooden flutes are a super buy for the children.

Do not buy the banjo-like instruments made from tortoise shells. Tortoises are in danger of extinction in Morocco.

Best places to Buy: Marrakech, Agadir, Essaouira, towns near the Sahara Desert.

Price Guide: Cymbals 20 Dhs. Other instruments depend on quality, size and age,

20. Paintings.

Some of the contemporary Moroccan artists are extremely talented and for this reason, Moroccan art is much sought after in some quarters. In the medinas, you will find art shops exhibiting the work of local artists in a wide range of styles. Often they are simple scenes of children in the streets, buildings, or a sunset. I have a gorgeous painting of a traditional staircase in Fes. An excellent souvenir to buy in Morocco that will only increase in value.

Best Places to Buy: Medinas across the country.

Price Guide: Very reasonable, but haggle for an even better bargain.
