Asilah, a picturesque coastal town in northern Morocco, draws travellers with its whitewashed Medina, vibrant street art, and tranquil beaches. But as with any destination, safety is a key concern. Is Asilah safe for tourists in 2026? Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a family, or a first-time visitor to Morocco, this guide covers everything you need to know about safety in Asilah. From crime rates to nighttime strolls through the famous blue alleyways, let’s explore what makes this town a secure and welcoming spot for your next trip.

Overview of Asilah

Nestled along Morocco’s Atlantic coastline, Asilah is celebrated for its artistic heritage, relaxed ambiance, and historic Medina. Unlike the larger, busier cities of Morocco, Asilah offers a more intimate, community-focused environment. The town is famous for its annual cultural festivals, where art and music merge with local traditions. Visitors to Asilah enjoy its pristine beaches, charming blue-and-white streets, and a slow pace of life that provides a refreshing break from urban chaos. Its rich history and creative spirit make Asilah a must-visit destination in Morocco, but ensuring your safety is essential to fully enjoy what the town has to offer.

Crime Rates in Asilah: Petty Theft vs. Violent Crime Trends

Asilah enjoys a reputation as one of Morocco’s safer destinations. Crime rates here are low, especially when compared to bustling cities like Marrakech or Casablanca. The most frequent issue travellers might encounter is petty theft—think pickpocketing or bag snatching in crowded spots like markets or the Medina. Violent crime, however, is a rarity. Local reports and tourist experiences consistently show that physical harm to visitors is almost nonexistent.

The Moroccan government has worked hard to keep tourist areas secure, and Asilah benefits from this focus. In 2026, the town’s small size and tight-knit community play a big part in keeping crime at bay. Locals tend to notice anything unusual quickly, and the increased police presence in popular areas adds an extra layer of protection. While staying alert is always smart, especially in busy places, Asilah’s crime stats suggest it’s a place where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Is Asilah Safe for Tourists?

Yes, Asilah is a safe haven for tourists. The town thrives on tourism, and both residents and officials go out of their way to ensure visitors feel secure. The Medina, with its maze-like streets and lively souks, is well-patrolled. The blue alleyways—a highlight for photographers—are safe to explore day or night. That said, petty theft can happen, so a few basic precautions go a long way:

Keep wallets, phones, and passports tucked away in a secure bag.

Use a cross-body bag or money belt for extra peace of mind.

Watch your belongings in crowded areas like the markets.

Avoid flashing cash or expensive gadgets.

With these simple steps, you’ll find Asilah’s charm—its art-covered walls, fresh seafood, and laid-back vibe—easy to enjoy without worry.

Is Asilah Safe for Solo Travellers?

Solo travellers will love Asilah’s welcoming feel. The town’s relaxed pace and friendly locals make it a breeze to navigate alone. Whether you’re sipping mint tea at a café, wandering the Medina, or soaking up the sun on the beach, you’ll feel at ease. Still, solo travel anywhere calls for a bit of caution, especially after dark.

Here’s how to stay safe as a solo traveller in Asilah:

Stick to well-lit, busy areas at night.

Avoid wandering into empty backstreets alone.

Book a reputable guesthouse or hotel with good reviews.

Keep your phone charged for navigation or emergencies.

Asilah’s small size and community spirit make it a top pick for solo adventurers seeking a stress-free getaway.

Safety Comparison: Asilah vs. Chefchaouen/Tangier

How does Asilah stack up against nearby hotspots like Chefchaouen and Tangier? Here’s a quick look at safety across these three destinations:

Chefchaouen: Famous for its blue streets, Chefchaouen is generally safe but sees more petty crime due to its tourist boom. Its hilly layout can also feel confusing, which might leave you vulnerable if you’re not careful.

Tangier: As a busy port city, Tangier has a higher incidence of pickpocketing and tourist scams. While violent crime is uncommon, it’s less relaxed than Asilah.

Asilah’s smaller scale and lower crime rates give it an edge, making it a safer bet for a calm and secure trip.

Police Presence in the Medina of Asilah

The Medina—Asilah’s historic heart—is a safe place to wander, thanks to a noticeable police presence. Officers are posted at key entry points like Bab Al Kasbah and Bab Homar, and they patrol the narrow streets regularly. This setup keeps trouble at bay and offers reassurance to visitors. If you ever need help, a police officer is usually nearby, or you can ask a local shopkeeper to point you in the right direction.

Morocco takes tourist safety seriously, and Asilah reflects that commitment. Emergency services are well-coordinated, so even in rare situations, assistance is quick to arrive. You’re unlikely to need it, but it’s nice to know the support is there.

Safety for Solo Female Travellers

Solo female travellers can visit Asilah with confidence, though a few extra steps can enhance your experience. Morocco leans conservative, so dressing modestly—covering shoulders and knees—helps you blend in and avoid unwanted attention. Catcalling might happen, but it’s typically harmless. A firm “no” or simply walking away usually does the trick.

Here are some tips tailored for solo women:

Steer clear of isolated areas after dark.

Choose accommodations with strong reviews from other female travelers.

Arrange taxis through your hotel rather than hailing one off the street.

Carry a small safety whistle or alarm for added security.

Most women who’ve travelled solo to Asilah rave about the warm locals and safe vibe, making it a standout choice for independent explorers.

Nighttime Safety in Asilah

The white alleyways of Asilah’s Medina are pure magic at night—think soft lighting, cool breezes, and walls painted in every shade of blue. Better yet, they’re safe to explore after dark. The streets are well-lit, and police patrols keep the area secure. Since the Medina is compact, you’re always close to a lively café or shop, adding to the comfort factor.

For a worry-free evening stroll:

Stay on the main paths and skip dimly lit shortcuts.

Go with a friend if you can.

Keep your phone handy for photos—or just in case.

The white alleyways offer a rare blend of beauty and safety, perfect for a nighttime adventure.

Local Perspectives on Tourist Safety

Ask a local about safety in Asilah, and you’ll hear pride in their voices. The town’s residents see tourism as a lifeline and work hard to keep visitors happy and secure. Shopkeepers often double as informal guides, offering directions or tips with a smile. “We look out for everyone here,” says Fatima, a vendor in the Medina. “Tourists are our guests.”

This community mindset creates a warm, protective atmosphere. Locals take it personally if something goes wrong, which keeps Asilah’s streets peaceful and inviting.

Risks During Peak Tourist Seasons (Summer/Holidays)

Summer and holiday periods bring crowds to Asilah, filling the Medina with energy. While this liveliness is part of the fun, it can attract pickpockets looking for easy targets in busy markets or festival scenes. Still, the overall risk stays low, and police step up their presence during these times to keep things under control.

To stay safe during peak seasons:

Secure your bags and keep them close.

Skip carrying lots of cash—use cards where possible.

Watch out for anyone trying to distract you with overly friendly chatter.

Even with more visitors, Asilah holds onto its safe and friendly charm.

Emergency Preparedness

If something unexpected happens, Asilah has you covered. The local police station is easy to reach, and officers are trained to assist tourists. For medical needs, a small hospital serves the town, with larger facilities just a short drive away in Tangier. Keep these numbers handy:

Police: 190

Ambulance: 150

Fire Department: 150

Tangier Tourist Office, Asilah: +212(0)539 948 050

Hotels and guesthouses can also help in a pinch, whether it’s calling for help or providing basic aid. Travel insurance is a smart move, covering everything from lost bags to medical emergencies. Chances are slim you’ll need it, but it’s good to be prepared.

Wrapping Up

Asilah shines as a safe and inviting destination in 2026. Low crime rates, a strong police presence, and a community that embraces tourists make it a standout spot in Morocco. Whether you’re travelling solo, with family, or as a woman exploring on your own, a few common-sense precautions will ensure a smooth trip. So grab your camera, lace up your walking shoes, and get ready to fall in love with Asilah’s beaches, art, and blue-hued streets—all with peace of mind.

Casablanca is a bustling metropolis that blends modernity with rich cultural heritage. As Morocco’s largest city and economic hub, it attracts millions of visitors every year. With its striking architecture, vibrant markets, and seaside promenades, Casablanca offers an unforgettable travel experience.

But before you book your trip, you might be wondering: Is Casablanca safe in 2026? In this guide, we break down the current safety landscape in Casablanca, provide practical tips for solo travelers, compare safety with other major Moroccan cities, and share local opinions on tourist security. Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends, or as part of a group, understanding these key factors will help ensure a worry-free visit.

Is Casablanca Safe for Solo Travelers in 2026?

Solo travelers often have unique concerns when exploring a new destination, and Casablanca is no exception. The city is generally welcoming, and many solo adventurers report positive experiences. Here are some insights for solo travelers in Casablanca this year:

Vibrant Tourist Areas: Popular districts such as the Corniche, Ain Diab, and the areas surrounding the Hassan II Mosque are well-patrolled and frequented by visitors. These areas are ideal for solo travelers as they provide ample opportunities to enjoy local cuisine, culture, and shopping in a secure environment.

Staying Connected: It is wise for solo travelers to have a local SIM card or reliable mobile internet to navigate using apps like Google Maps or to call for help if needed.

Cultural Sensitivity: Dressing modestly and respecting local customs not only shows respect but also helps you blend in. This is especially important for women traveling alone.

Using Reputable Transport: Whether you’re hailing an official taxi or arranging a ride through your hotel, using reputable transportation reduces risks.

Solo travelers who prepare in advance and stay aware of their surroundings can enjoy a safe and enriching experience in Casablanca.

Crime Rate Trends: Petty Theft vs. Violent Crime

Understanding the crime landscape in Casablanca is crucial for any traveler. Crime in Casablanca primarily consists of petty theft and scams, while violent crime is exceptionally rare.

Petty Theft

Common Occurrence: Pickpocketing and bag snatching are the most common crimes, especially in crowded places like markets, public squares, and on public transportation.

Preventive Measures: Tourists are advised to keep valuables secure—using money belts or concealed bags—and to be vigilant in busy areas. Simple precautions, such as avoiding displaying expensive electronics or large sums of cash, go a long way in preventing theft.

Violent Crime

Low Incidence: Violent crime in Casablanca is very low compared to many other global cities. The focus of criminal activity remains on petty theft.

General Safety: With a visible police presence and efforts by local authorities, incidents of violent crime are uncommon.

Overall, while petty theft remains a concern that demands awareness, Casablanca’s safety record regarding violent crime is reassuring for tourists.

Terrorism Advisories for Casablanca

Terrorism is a global concern, and Morocco is no exception. However, in Casablanca, the risk remains low, and the local government has implemented rigorous security measures to prevent any major incidents.

Government Measures: Authorities have increased police patrols in tourist areas and implemented advanced surveillance systems. These measures help deter potential threats.

Advisory Levels: Most government travel advisories rate Morocco as safe with a recommendation to exercise caution, primarily due to the low likelihood of terrorist activities in urban centers like Casablanca.

Stay Informed: As a traveler, it’s important to monitor local news and travel advisories from reliable sources such as the Government of Canada or Smartraveller.

For tourists, following the advice and staying updated with official advisories will minimize any potential risks related to terrorism.

Safety Comparison: Casablanca vs. Marrakech, Rabat, and Fes

When deciding where to travel in Morocco, safety is a key factor. Here’s a quick comparison of Casablanca with other popular Moroccan cities:

Casablanca, with its modern infrastructure and robust security measures, offers a balanced level of safety comparable to Marrakech, Rabat, and Fes. However, each city has its unique challenges—Casablanca’s urban environment may expose you to more opportunistic petty crimes, while Marrakech’s lively markets require extra vigilance.

Local Opinions on Tourist Safety

Local perspectives are invaluable in understanding the true safety of a destination. Here’s what locals and recent visitors say about Casablanca:

Warm Hospitality: Many locals in Casablanca pride themselves on their hospitality. Tourists often share positive experiences about how friendly and helpful residents are.

Visible Security: Visitors appreciate the noticeable police presence in popular areas. This reassurance helps create a sense of security, even in bustling urban settings.

Mixed Reviews: Some travelers report minor issues such as occasional scams or pickpocketing, but these are consistent with most major cities around the world. Most incidents can be easily avoided with basic precautions.

Comparison to Other Cities: While Casablanca has its challenges, locals often note that it is as safe as or even safer than other large cities in Morocco when proper precautions are taken.

By engaging with local opinions on forums and travel blogs, you can gather firsthand insights that reinforce the overall perception of Casablanca as a secure destination for tourists.

Impact of Urbanization on Safety

Casablanca is Morocco’s most modern city, and urbanization has had a significant impact on its safety landscape.

Modern Infrastructure: Rapid urban development has led to improved public services, better road networks, and enhanced communication systems. This modern infrastructure supports a higher level of safety.

Economic Growth: The growth in tourism and business has incentivized the government to invest in security measures. More surveillance cameras, regular police patrols, and updated public transportation systems contribute to a safer environment.

Overcrowding: On the downside, rapid urbanization can lead to overcrowding in some areas, especially in commercial districts and popular tourist spots. This can sometimes increase the risk of petty crime.

Community Programs: Urban initiatives that promote community engagement and support local businesses have also helped reduce crime rates. Efforts to maintain clean, well-lit public spaces contribute to overall safety.

Urbanization, while bringing its own challenges, has generally improved safety in Casablanca, ensuring that the city remains a reliable destination for travelers.

Police Visibility in Tourist Zones

A key factor contributing to Casablanca’s safety is the visible presence of law enforcement in tourist areas. Local police work hard to protect visitors in busy zones:

Dedicated Tourist Police: Casablanca has a dedicated tourist police unit that patrols major attractions such as the Corniche, the Old Medina, and the areas around the Hassan II Mosque. Their presence reassures tourists and deters potential criminal activities.

Regular Patrols: Frequent police patrols in popular districts help maintain order and provide immediate assistance if needed.

Collaborative Efforts: There is strong cooperation between police, local businesses, and tourism operators. This collaboration ensures that visitors receive timely information and assistance.

Emergency Response: With quick response times and multilingual officers, emergency situations are managed efficiently. This rapid response is vital in maintaining a safe environment for all.

This proactive approach by law enforcement plays a crucial role in sustaining the safety of Casablanca for both locals and tourists.

Casablanca Nightlife Safety After Midnight

Casablanca’s vibrant nightlife offers a mix of modern clubs, traditional cafes, and elegant restaurants. However, like any major city, nighttime safety requires some extra precautions.

What to Expect After Midnight

Lively but Controlled: Popular areas, especially around the Corniche and upscale neighborhoods, remain lively well into the night. These areas are well-patrolled by police and offer secure environments for enjoying the local nightlife.

Isolated Areas: In contrast, some parts of the city, particularly in older districts or poorly lit neighborhoods, may become quieter and riskier after midnight. It is best to avoid these areas, particularly if you’re traveling alone.

Transportation: Rely on reputable transportation services at night. Use official taxis or arrange rides through your hotel rather than hailing a cab off the street.

Social Settings: If you’re planning to enjoy the nightlife, stay in groups or with trusted friends. Being part of a group not only enhances the fun but also increases your safety.

By sticking to well-lit, busy areas and using reliable transport, you can enjoy Casablanca’s nightlife without compromising your safety.

In 2026, Casablanca continues to be a dynamic and secure destination for travelers who take basic safety precautions. The city’s modern infrastructure, proactive police presence, and vibrant urban culture make it a great choice for solo travelers, families, and groups. While petty theft and scams can occur—especially in crowded areas—violent crime is rare, and terrorism risk remains low.

Key takeaways for ensuring your safety in Casablanca include:

For solo travelers: Stay aware, use reputable transportation, and dress modestly to blend in.

On crime: Manage your belongings carefully to prevent petty theft.

Regarding terrorism: Stay updated with local advisories from reliable sources.

Comparative safety: Casablanca’s security measures are on par with or exceed those of Marrakech, Rabat, and Fes.

Local insight: Listen to local opinions and use trusted guides to enhance your experience.

Urban impact: Modern urban development in Casablanca has largely improved public safety.

Nightlife: Enjoy the city after midnight by sticking to well-lit and busy areas.

By following these guidelines, you can explore Casablanca with confidence and fully appreciate its unique blend of modernity and tradition. Enjoy your journey, keep these safety tips in mind, and experience the best that Casablanca has to offer in 2026!

Fes is a city steeped in history and cultural charm. As one of Morocco’s most iconic destinations, it lures travellers with its ancient Medina, bustling souks, and traditional craftsmanship. But before planning your trip, you might ask: Is Fes safe in 2026? This guide breaks down the safety landscape for Fes, offering practical advice for solo travellers, insights into crime trends, and comparisons with other Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Casablanca.

In this article, we cover:

Safety for solo travellers in Fes

Crime trends: petty theft versus violent crime

Terrorism risk and current advisories

A comparison: Fes vs. Marrakech/Casablanca

Local perspectives on tourist safety

How tourism growth impacts safety

Police presence in key areas

Nighttime safety and risks after dark

Let’s explore what you need to know about staying safe while you immerse yourself in the magic of Fes.

Is Fes Safe for Solo Travellers in 2026?

Many solo travellers, including women, choose Fes for its rich heritage and vibrant culture. Overall, Fes is considered safe for those who take basic precautions. Travellers report that, with a bit of common sense, navigating the winding streets of the Medina can be both exciting and secure.

For solo travellers:

Stay alert: The Medina is a maze, so keep your belongings close and avoid distraction.

Plan ahead: Knowing your route or hiring a trusted local guide can help prevent getting lost.

Dress appropriately: Modest attire not only shows respect for local customs but also helps you blend in.

Use reputable transportation: Whether using a taxi or a rideshare, always choose licensed services.

Read more on solo travel safety in Morocco.

Many solo female travellers have found Fes to be welcoming and safe during the day. However, caution is advised after dark, especially in less crowded areas.

Crime Rates in Fes: Petty Theft vs. Violent Crime Trends

When it comes to crime, Fes is generally peaceful. Violent crime is rare, and most reported incidents involve petty theft or opportunistic scams. The maze-like Medina, with its bustling markets, can attract pickpockets. Yet, these issues are common in tourist destinations worldwide and are manageable with simple precautions.

Key Points on Crime in Fes:

Petty Theft: Pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur in crowded areas.

Violent Crime: Serious violent incidents are extremely rare, making Fes one of the safer cities in Morocco.

Scams: Unofficial guides and overly persistent vendors sometimes target tourists, so always agree on prices beforehand.

By keeping your valuables secure (using a money belt or keeping cash in your front pocket) and being vigilant in crowded places, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to petty crimes.

Terrorism Risk in Fes: Current Advisories

In 2026, the overall risk of terrorism in Morocco remains low. Fes, while rich in history, has not been a focal point for terrorism in recent years. The Moroccan government continues to implement stringent security measures, and terrorism-related advisories generally caution travellers to stay informed and avoid specific high-risk areas—not Fes itself.

Travel advisories from various government sources suggest that while there is always a potential risk, major incidents have been rare in cities like Fes. Keeping abreast of local news and following advice from reliable sources can help you remain secure.

Safety Comparison: Fes vs. Marrakech vs. Casablanca

While Fes offers an authentic and immersive experience, it’s useful to compare its safety with other Moroccan cities. Here’s a snapshot:

Fes is generally on par with Marrakech and Casablanca in terms of safety. However, each city has its nuances: Fes’s historic Medina is charming but can be confusing, while Marrakech is lively with a robust police presence, and Casablanca’s modern areas benefit from enhanced surveillance. All require common-sense precautions.

Local Perspectives on Tourist Safety

Local perspectives can provide a wealth of insight. Many tourists and residents in Fes report that the city is welcoming, with locals proud of their heritage and eager to share it with visitors. Forums like Reddit’s r/Morocco reveal mixed reviews:

Some travellers stress that Fes is safe if you stick to well-known areas and avoid wandering alone after dark.

Others advise that, while scams and pickpocketing do occur, they can be avoided with vigilance.

Solo female travellers have largely positive experiences, provided they dress modestly and stay in reputable accommodations.

Overall, the consensus is that Fes is safe for tourists, with the usual precautions that apply to any busy, historic city.

6. Impact of Tourism Growth on Safety

Tourism in Fes has grown steadily over the years, leading to both positive and challenging impacts on safety:

Increased Police Presence: With more visitors, local authorities have ramped up security measures in tourist hotspots like the medina and near major attractions.

Economic Benefits: Tourism has boosted the local economy, which in turn has led to better infrastructure and security investments.

Overcrowding: However, the surge in tourists can sometimes lead to overcrowded streets, especially in narrow medina alleys, which can create an environment where petty crime is more likely.

The overall trend suggests that while increased tourism brings challenges, the response from local authorities and the community is geared toward ensuring that visitors remain safe and enjoy their experience.

Police Presence in Tourist Areas

One of the reassuring aspects of Fes is the visible police presence in key tourist areas. Local law enforcement focuses on protecting tourists, particularly in the Medina, where incidents of petty theft are more common.

Tourist Police: Dedicated units patrol busy areas and are often stationed near major landmarks.

Rapid Response: In case of emergencies, police in Fes are trained to respond swiftly to incidents, which further bolsters the safety net for visitors.

Collaborative Efforts: The cooperation between local businesses, hotels, and law enforcement has created a supportive environment for tourists.

This proactive approach by the police ensures that while you enjoy the rich history and culture of Fes, help is never far away.

Nighttime Safety: Risks After Dark

Nighttime in Fes, particularly in the ancient Medina, can feel different from daytime. While most areas remain safe, some precautions are recommended:

Avoid Isolated Streets: After dark, stick to well-lit, busy areas. The Medina’s narrow alleyways can become confusing and deserted at night.

Group Travel: If possible, travel with a companion or group when out after sunset.

Use Trusted Transport: Rather than walking alone, consider using a taxi arranged through your hotel or a trusted service.

Stay Informed: Check with your accommodation for advice on areas to avoid after dark.

Taking these simple steps can help ensure that your nighttime explorations remain safe while still allowing you to experience the enchanting atmosphere of Fes under the stars.

Final Thoughts

So, is Fes safe in 2026? The answer is yes—provided you exercise common sense and take basic precautions. Fes is a city that welcomes millions of visitors every year, thanks to its deep-rooted history, rich culture, and warm hospitality. While petty theft and scams can occur, violent crime remains very rare. The active police presence and ongoing investments in tourist safety contribute to a secure environment.

For solo travellers, especially women, Fes offers an enriching experience if you plan your route, use trusted transportation, and dress modestly. Compared to other Moroccan cities like Marrakech and Casablanca, Fes provides a quieter, more traditional atmosphere with its labyrinthine Medina—but it requires the same awareness and precautions as any popular tourist destination.

In short, by staying alert, respecting local customs, and following these practical safety tips, you can explore Fes with confidence and create unforgettable memories in one of Morocco’s most fascinating cities.

Tourism to Morocco is increasing exponentially, after a brief slow-down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2025, Morocco welcomed 19.8 million visitors, beating the previous record. 2026 is predicted to be bigger by far as more and more people from all over the world come to enjoy the delights of Morocco.

Most tourists fly to Morocco, usually to Casablanca or Marrakech, but more flights are arriving in Tangier. Tangier Med Port is now the busiest commercial port in the Mediterranean, while Tangier Ville is only a 45-minute trip from Spain across the Straits of Gibraltar so that Tangier is packed with tourists arriving from across Europe and elsewhere, arriving through Spain, crossing the Med by ferry direct to Morocco or indirectly through the Spanish enclaves of Sebta and Melilla. Ferries are also becoming more regular from Gibraltar, France, and Italy.

Folks come from Spain sometimes just for a day trip to Tanger or to begin a longer adventure exploring Morocco and the Moroccans are there awaiting them.

So the question on many people’s lips is; “Is Tangier safe?”.

This article will answer the question in some detail, but, spoiler alert!, the short answer is, “Yes, pretty much”.

So here are some questions we are often asked regarding safety in Tangier, together with up-to-date information and answers

Is Tangier Safe To Visit?

Tangier is safer to visit today than it has ever been. Nowhere in the world is 100% safe at all times, but Tangier is comparatively safe to visit. An increased and visible police and security presence is noticeable to visitors, helping them feel reassured and able to understand that the Moroccan King, the government, and regional authorities take the safety of tourists very seriously indeed. It is still recommended to take sensible precautions and be vigilant, however. To begin, you should ensure that you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you arrive in Morocco.

The Travel Advisory listing for Tangier currently stands at Level 2 which is “Increased Caution Advised”

General Safety Tips

Take note of specific recommendations or guidelines from local authorities, your tour company, or accommodations. Check for updates just before you travel.

Always be alert and aware of your current surroundings.

Ensure your personal belongings are secure, consider a moneybelt, and don’t be ostentatious with electronic equipment, personal jewellery, or flashing your money about. Beware of pickpockets, especially in crowded places and on public transport.

It is essential to respect local customs, such as Ramadan, and dress modestly in more conservative areas and religious sites.

Avoid walking about at night time, particularly if you are alone or in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas.

Use official, reputable tour companies, and modes of transport, and be cautious with taxis, ride-shares, and Airbnb or couch-sharing services.

Is Public Transport in Tangier Safe to Use?

Tangier has an excellent bus service and is the terminal for train travel going elsewhere in Morocco. Thus the trains and buses are used frequently by locals and tourists alike. The trains and buses are well-maintained and the trains have guards while the buses are equipped with CCTV cameras which are constantly being monitored to ensure the safety of passengers which the Tangier authorities take very seriously. Buses are cheap and the most used transport by the locals. Train fares are very reasonable and both methods of transport are considered to be safe ways to travel.

But always be mindful of your possessions as pickpockets are the greatest security threat on buses particularly during the rush hour when there is often standing room only and the vehicles will be crowded.

Once, when a Moroccan friend of mine was on a bus, a young man tapped her on the shoulder and offered a mobile phone to her. She looked at the device and said in surprise, “That’s my phone!”

“Yes”, replied the man.”I am a thief and stole your phone but it is rubbish so I don’t want it.”!

Otherwise, the buses are quite safe and passengers and staff will usually be happy to help if you need any local information or want to know which is your stop.

Is It Safe To Drive in Tangier?

Many tourists take their cars to Tangier, either by ferry from mainland Spain or from the Spanish enclaves of Sebta (Cueta) or Melilla. Others rent a car on arrival in the city to have more freedom to explore Morocco.

The road quality in Tangier is generally very good, but Moroccan drivers are often crazy. Drivers will often ignore traffic laws, drive too quickly whilst jumping from lane to lane to overtake and cars will stop beyond the traffic lights to gain a few metres advantage but are then unable to see the lights change and have to rely on vehicles behind blaring their horns to signal a green light. Pedestrians walk in the road and cross at random points as drivers rarely stop for zebra crossings and motorbike riders often ignore even red lights.

Additionally, note the signage may be only in Arabic in some cases and that the speed limits and distances are set in kilometres per hour not miles per hour.

The key is therefore to drive defensively. There are many police checkpoints, so always have your documentation on hand. Ensure you have full insurance coverage. Check all the local driving laws and regulations.

Driving in Tangier can be a harrowing experience, but if you drive thinking that everyone else on the road is an idiot, you should be fine.

Are Families Safe Visiting Tangier?

The Moroccan people adore children and will spoil them rotten at every opportunity. Even thieves and pickpockets rarely target infants. The tourist sector including hotels and riads will go out of their way to ensure families have a happy and safe time in Tangier. Increased and visible police and security services help to make families feel secure exploring the city. The city is very family-friendly and there are many places to see and activities to share with the whole family The beaches are ideal and fun for everyone.

Just be sensible and follow the usual safety guidelines and you’ll be fine.

Are Women Safe Visiting Tangier?

Sometimes female travellers will worry about visiting Morocco, especially if they travel alone or with other women. Morocco is, after all, a Muslim country but it is very respectful to people who respect the local way of life, and Moroccan women themselves often choose not to wear a hijab and wear modern, western fashions.

Tangier is generally safe for female travellers, but caution is advised, be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t go wandering about in dimly lit areas at night, don’t be ostentatious with your mobile devices or jewellery, keep your bags and money secure and dress modestly in more conservative areas or religious sites. I have met many women who have had a wonderful time visiting Tangier.

Is it Safe Travelling Alone in Tangier?

Solo travellers have been visiting Tangier to experience the hippy culture for decades. Those days may be gone, but solo travellers still come and are pretty safe when they follow the usual basic safety precautions; staying in well-lit areas after dark, keeping alert at all times, and not flashing about expensive electronic devices or bulging wallets.

I have been alone in Tangier on several occasions, and, apart from one time when a guy followed me for an hour begging for money, offering me hashish, a hotel, a taxi and to carry my bags, I never had any problems. Even that one guy was in no way threatening, just annoying.

Is Aibnb Safe in Tangier?

Yes, Airbnb in Tangier is rated as very safe indeed. It can be a great way of finding safe, convenient, and comfortable accommodation in the city.

As always with this service it is wise to plan ahead and be cautious. Read the reviews and check out the ratings of the host and accommodation. The experience of previous visitors can be telling. Contact the host directly before you book to get the feel of the person and ask any questions that you may have. Their ability and willingness to respond and how they interact with you can be useful guidelines. When you arrive, always check the safety and security of the place; fire alarms and extinguishers, locks for doors and windows, is there CCTV, and is someone always on the premises?

If you do have any concerns whatsoever, then contact the Airbnb helpline/ customer support which is very effective at finding solutions to your problems.

Is Uber Safe In Tangier?

Unfortunately, Uber pulled out of Morocco in 2018 due to what it described as the “Taxi Mafia”. But not to worry, Uber’s Middle Eastern subsidiary, Careem, is still operating in Tangier, as well as another taxi app called Roby. These are considered to be safe in Tangier. But always verify the driver’s and the vehicle’s details before entering the car, and check the driver’s photo ID, license plate and number match the information on the app. Tell somebody else the details of your ride before you travel for extra security.

Is It Safe To Live in Tangier?

I have lived in Fes for nearly twenty years but know several expats who live in Tangier. More ex-pats live in Tangier than in Fes because the Spanish move there due to its proximity to Spain and the Spanish colonisation, the British because of their shared history with the city, and Americans because of the literary and hippy connections. They tell me it is a nice and safe place to reside, especially in the last decade or two since the government and local authorities improved security and tightened up on law enforcement. Crime rates have decreased over this period and are still going down.

Like anywhere else, crime does still occur, particularly petty thefts, burglary, and scamming, but being vigilant and cautious should reduce the risks greatly.

Is it Safe To Use Drugs in Tangier?

NO!

Morocco is the number one supplier of marijuana to Europe. It is commonly called hash or hashish here, but it will often be offered to foreigners as “chocolate”, “good shit” or “ would you like to go to a party”.

However, the use of hashish and other such substances is illegal in Morocco, and if you are caught in possession you can expect a hefty fine and a lengthy spell in one of Morocco’s not very pleasant prisons. The days of the “Marrakech Express” are long gone and the authorities take drug use very seriously. There are also many scams, some of them involving the police where you can be sold some hash and immediately after get stopped by the police and arrested with a reward going to the seller who informed the authorities! The use, sale, distribution, import, and export of drugs are all illegal. The safety and quality of drugs in Morocco are also suspect; many drugs are mixed with other chemicals to reduce costs to the dealers. These can have worse-than-usual health consequences.

Using drugs also puts you more at risk of accidents and falling victim to other crimes as your awareness will be lessened.

So, no, it is not safe to do drugs in Tangier.

Don’t do it.

Top Five Scams and Rip-Offs in Tangier.

As with any popular tourist city in the world, there are always those who will take advantage of naive tourists with more money than sense. So be sensible. Tangier is not a hot-bed of crime, but it does occur so here are the Top Five Scams and Rip-Offs in Tangier to watch out for:

Pickpockets. Sadly, these are not unknown and some of them are so good you won’t notice you’ve been robbed until hours later. Use secure money belts and keep a close guard of your pockets and bags, on buses and In crowded, bustling streets especially in medinas and at prayer times, pickpockets will be present. Keep alert!

Overpricing. Another easy way to lose a lot of money. Some unscrupulous vendors will see a tourist a mile away and assume that all foreigners, especially Japanese, Americans, and Western Europeans, are loaded with money. They will judge you in part on the quality of your clothes, your shoes, and your watch, phone, and jewellery and start the bargaining process with a price based on your appearance. Dress casually and wear sneakers or scuffed shoes, keeping expensive items to a minimum and hidden. And always haggle; the price will be inflated to begin anyway, as that is the time-honoured way of conducting business here.

Fake or poor-quality souvenirs. Just be cautious, some items are not what they claim to be. Fake watches, counterfeit Brand Name items, and fake fossils are examples of what to look out for, especially in tourist hot spots. Always check the items carefully before purchasing.

Faux Guides. Official Guides wear a suit or traditional djellaba and have an authorised badge in plain view. Fake guides, called faux guides in Morocco, will often be as informed, professional, and friendly as a real guide, but will take you to shops and restaurants where they get a cut, so they are not necessarily the best places. They also can charge an arm and a leg for their services. Ask for accreditation or trust reputable tour operators. Some better genuine guides are listed on online blogs about Morocco or in tourist guidebooks such as Lonely Planet.

Taxi Scams. The majority of taxi drivers are decent, honest, hard-working folks, but a few are not. Some will overcharge. If you are getting a Grand Taxi to another city, there should be a price list posted publicly at the taxi station so ask to see this. Always agree on the fare in advance. The local, intercity Petit Taxis, pale blue with a yellow racing stripe in Tangier will have a fixed-price meter. Ensure it is switched on and reset at the start of your journey. If the driver says the meter is broken, he is probably up to no good, so get another taxi. Some taxi drivers will also go by a longer route than is necessary. I always tell the taxi driver that it’s nice to be back in Tangier again and I know and love the city. Never fails.

In Conclusion.

In summary, then, tourists can be reasonably well assured of having a splendid time in the beautiful, cultural, and historic city of Tangier as it is comparatively safe to visit. The government, at both national and regional levels, has put a not inconsiderable amount of time, effort, and money into tightening security and improving safety and a very visible police, security, and military presence helps make visitors feel secure.

Take note of our advice, stay informed of the latest local updates, and always be cautious, sensible, and aware of your surroundings and you should enjoy a happy visit to the wonderful Moroccan city of Tangier.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS:

It is recommended that you write these emergency numbers down and program them into your mobile phone before you travel.

We very much hope that you will never need them, but it is wise to keep them handy – Just in case!

Police: 190

Ambulance: 15

Fire Service: 15

Tourist Police: +212 539 32 23 61

Tourist Board (Tangier): +212 539 93 36 10

An ideal horror story would begin with a baby in a cradle, a monster sliding into the room, slowing to a crawl and stopping to face the baby. All of a sudden, an incredible lighting strikes and a loud scream echoes to wake up the whole neighbourhood. Alas, this is not a horror story you signed up for. Rather, this is your chance to embark on a new journey to a country you will know more about in this article. On that note, is Morocco safe for solo travellers?

Have you ever tried to teleport somewhere completely new, oddly fascinating, slightly exotic and breathtakingly beautiful without feeling terrified the slightest? I dare say you have never, but the idea should startle you if not terrify you.

One way or another, everyone is afraid of the unfamiliar, but it solely depends on where we go and the way we carry ourselves to determine whether a place is safe for us or not. On the northern part of the African continent, there lies a country with a population of 37 million people boarded by the Atlantic Ocean to the West, Mauritania to the Southeast, the Mediterranean Sea to the North, and Algeria to the East. That country is Morocco.

Thanks to its many geographical advantages, Morocco has gained in the last couple of years a huge popularity among foreign visitors all over the world. Just before the pandemic hit, more than 13 million
people visited the place, making it one of the most sought after countries in Africa.

However, despite Morocco’s popularity, it remains a foreign place even for a seasoned traveller. Therefore, many variables concerning safety and vigilance must be taken into consideration for a guaranteed safe travel. In this article, we will explore all the safety information for solo travelling you
need to know about Morocco before you book your next trip.

Statistically Speaking, Is Morocco Safe for Solo Travellers?

On the 2023 Global Peace Index, Morocco ranks 84th of 193 countries recording noticeable improvements in peacefulness. It takes the 7th place among Middle Eastern and North African countries with not a single recorded death from terrorism in 2022. That and the Global Organized Crime Index places Morocco on top of the United States in regards to the ongoing domestic and international conflict, militarisation and the societal safety and security.

In addition, Morocco is widely recognized by its stable governments, its international cooperation with both the United States and other European countries, and its national policies and strict law enforcement.

According to the statistics, Morocco is not in the least a violent or a dangerous country. Random violent crimes or attacks are very rare and the chances of you coming across someone with a gun or a machete pointed at you are non-existent. However, that does not mean that taking certain measures of safety should not be taken seriously. Much like any other place in the world, petty crimes, frauds and pickpocketing do make an appearance from time to time.

The Pros and Cons of Solo Travel in Morocco

Solo travelling has become one of those spiritual activities that one must experience even once in their lifetime to connect with one’s psyche and blend with the universe. However, one cannot but ask the question: is Morocco safe for solo travellers? Here we will go through a list of pros and cons of solo travelling in Morocco and explore the do’s and dont’s as a solo traveller in a foreign country.

The People

From the moment you set foot in Morocco to the moment you leave, you will be met with smiling faces and people who are truly interested in you. Usually when you are entering a country, the immigration process can be quite intimidating even if you are a law-abiding citizen. Morocco, however, is widly recognised for its positive security guards and its welcoming atmosphere, which can uplift your spirit as a solo traveller.

Do not be shaken if someone taps on your shoulder and smilingly offers you a piece of Chebakkiya, a traditional Moroccan sweet, as you are wandering around the Medina. Moroccans are some of the most hospitable, open-minded and amiable people out there. Though the way they converse may come as aggressive, they are most likely cracking jokes and having fun.

You will be surprised by how good locals are at foreign languages. Located only 14.5km away from Europe, Moroccans have developed a faculty of speech that encompasses more than their mother tongue. Be it French, Spanish, English, German or Classic Arabic, you can always find someone to offer you help when lost alone and stuck with Google Translate.

Urban Areas

Touristic cities around Morocco such as Fes, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech and Rabat have a strong presence of tourist police. As tourism is what many people profit from, it has become a national matter that not only concerns authorities but locals as well. Therefore, foreign visitors’ security and safety, especially in places such as souks and medinas, are taken very seriously, which will provide you with a safe and enjoyable solo travel experience.

Morocco is also a conservative Muslim country. Nonetheless, its society is considered one of the most tolerant Muslim societies in Africa. Being so close to Europe, it remains relatively different, maintaining its own properties, customs, traditions and culture, which must be respected so as not to put oneself in unfavourable situations. Still, Morocco is a great getaway and segue to your solo travel experience in North Africa.

Remote Areas

Morocco, with all its wild nature, beautiful beaches and perfect climate is every backpacker’s dream. Ranging from camping in the Sahara Desert, mountain climbing in the High Atlas Mountains to sightseeing in Akchour Waterfalls, Morocco is undoubtedly the perfect spot to embark on new adventures and feed that wanderlust.

Now, while all this sleeping under the stars sounds tempting, you still want to be surrounded by people for extra safety. Even locals regard wild camping and hiking alone in remote areas as a dangerous activity. Ideally, such activities are often carried out by a group of people or friends to provide support to each other and look after one another.

Of course, hospitality of remote villages is every Moroccan’s pride and joy but it is safer to hire a local depending on where you go and what you want to see. Remember, you can never be so sure about the safety of a place especially when you are alone. In Morocco, there are lots of safer option to explore the wilderness and be satisfied with your travels. Be it joining guided hikes or camping at reliable campsites, it is much advisable to go accompanied with people than alone.

Safety Tips for Solo Travel in Morocco

You can never be too cautious in a foreign place. As much as Morocco is a welcoming country and a touristic place by excellence, you still need to follow these safety solo travel tips to ensure your well-being:

Don’t Be Ignorant

Immerse yourself in the culture and customs of the country you are visiting beforehand to ensure a comfortable travel experience free of all awkward situations. Moroccans take social etiquettes very seriously and they do not tolerate anyone disrespecting their places of worship. Try to learn more about Moroccan social etiquettes in this link.

Be Cautious of Scams and Petty Crimes

Moroccan society is very hospitable and you are most likely going to meet with individuals who will gladly offer you help without charging a dime. However, try your best not to take unsolicited advice or help from individuals forcing themselves on you. Keep your guard up and your belongings tightly close to you.

Dress Modestly

Being a conservative Muslim society, modesty is taken very seriously as a form of respect and humility. If you are a man, a good rule of thumb is to ensure your knees are covered and avoid skimpty tight clothes. Women are free to show their hair and advised to cover their knees and shoulders.

Is Morocco a safe place for solo travellers if you follow these tips? Absolutely. It is a friendly environment more than it will ever be hostile. Now, is there anything stopping you from choosing Morocco as your next destination?

If you are looking for a quick answer to the question “is Morocco safe for travellers?”, then YES, it is! Yet, You might still be wondering “Why is Morocco not ranked amongst the safest countries in the world, then?” And that’s what this article is here for, in essence.

Morocco has ranked as the “5th destination of excellence in the world” by TripAdvisor and booking sites, and 3rd as “the most welcoming country for foreign tourists”, according to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report (WEF).

More and more tourists are choosing Morocco as favourite destination as crime rates keep declining by the year, and the numbers are expected to continue increasing; hence indicating a safe destination. But of course, caution and social awareness, like in any country in the world, are advised!

Covid requirements for travellers

As of this article’s publishing date, the Kingdom of Morocco has reopened its sea and air borders and travellers, under certain conditions, can access Moroccan territory; if they have a valid vaccination passport of two doses will be accepted with no more than 4 months has passed since the second dose was received, or a negative PCR taken no longer than 72hrs before boarding. (Children under 12 years old are exempt from all entry requirements.)

For the reasons mentioned above, and all the conditions Morocco has put to keep its nation and its visitors safe, the logical response to “is Morocco safe after Covid?” is YES!

Is Morocco safe in 2025?

“Is Morocco safe in 2025?” That’s correct. Of course, a little prudence and common sense can go a long way, but most travels to this bewitching country are usually a complete success.

Morocco is, in fact, North Africa’s most politically stable country; no wars or internal conflicts are expected to occur during your stay.

To entice more tourists, the government has increased its infrastructural investment. You’ll benefit from the latter while landing and taking off from the different excellent airports, thousands of miles of highways, high-speed and normal trains, and the countless other transportation means, that Morocco provides to make your trip easier.

A holiday to Morocco right now should be quite safe and well worth it, with so much culture and history to explore, an easygoing atmosphere full of hospitality, and world renowned cities to discover!

Safest cities to visit in Morocco

Chefchaouen: The blue pearl

Chefchaouen’s appearance will quickly catch your attention, whether it is your first visit to Morocco or you have been to the country before and are familiar with how the kingdom looks.

Houses are typically modest, yet they are ornamented with brilliant white walls and vivid blue doors. By any international city’s standards, the streets are spotless, and if the deep blue doors set against relaxing white houses on immaculate streets wasn’t enough, there’s the skyline.

Chefchaouen is significantly smaller than larger towns like Tangier, making it a favourite destination for off-the-beaten-path travellers, and it is also known as one of Morocco’s safest cities. This is particularly amazing given how safe the rest of the country is. While any tourist should always exercise common sense and be prepared for the “just in case,” Chefchaouen is a rare city in that it boasts safety even at night.

So “is Morocco safe? and particularly Chefchaouen town?” A definite yes!

El jadida: Mazagan

The little city of Essaouira is located on the windswept Atlantic coast, roughly two hours southwest of Marrakesh. It’s also known by its original Portuguese name, “Mazagan.” This azure beachfront town combines the best of Morocco’s offerings — wonderful beaches, delicious food, and lively culture — with a laid-back vibe not found in other areas of the nation.

If you’ve ever seen Game of Thrones, you’ll remember Essaouira as the location where Daenerys Targaryen bought her army of Unsullied Soldiers.

The city is renowned for being one of the safest in the country both during the day and at night! But it’s fair to say that vigilance from pickpockets is always required.
